Fade & Pure - Jump Bridges (eve online)

Current draft : Image

Concept: Explore. Expand. Exploit. Exterminate. Conquer the Star clusters of Fade & Pure Blind, utilizing the ancient stargates or the high tech Jump Bridges.

Each circle/square is a star system, linked by an interstellar gate. Special interstellar gates called jumpbridges (coloured lines) link far off places. No starting positions, or anything overly fancy - just a map I think would make for a very interesting game. If anyone has any idea what kind of bonuses would be appropriate, and how they should be split I'd be grateful for the expert help. So far I was thinking hi-tech station systems [squares] give an extra bonus, and then dividing up the reset of the map by colour and having bonuses for the different areas.

I'm not sure if this has been suggested before, but has anyone tried to replicate the layout of the regions in eve online? It seems like they are plans just waiting to be made into boards.

Let me show you a few examples of the Jumpbridgemaps from the north of eve online. All created by players btw.
http://map.hirr.net/northernjb.jpg

This next map is of Pure Blind and Fade.
Bear in mind that for the adjacent regions of vale, cloud ring, tribute and deklein it does not show all systems, only the ones with a jb line/entrances. The map only shows Fade and Pure Blind in full.

link: http://map.hirr.net/sirius.jpg (even bigger map)

There is an even bigger map again which includes the Drone regions as they are called ingame... but theres no point in posting that... the drone regions are a messy maze of systems bigger than Russia. (edit: here it is just for fun: http://nc-jb-map.appspot.com/)

All of eve is available publicly from this website : http://evemaps.dotlan.net/universe
The Dotlan maps are ugly but would be miles easier to make a map from - This map here: http://evemaps.dotlan.net/map/Pure_Blind#const is the same Region as the Second map above - just without the jumpbridges and again in a different style.

Right so what are you looking at =S, let me explain... the coloured lines are player constructed gateways, so you can ignore them, or have them as special routes etc. The non-coloured lines are normal gate jumps. There's a key on both maps so you can read that lol. ;) In eve these maps are used as actual maps to navigate our jumpbridge networks. Jumpbridges can and frequently are moved, so the maps get updated fairly often. Some maps are based off the ingame map (like the first map I linked) and some are based off the ombey/dotlan layout (like the second map I linked). The numbers you see next to the circles are the names of the systems, like "LC-307". The smaller numbers on the edges of the coloured lines indicate to a pilot where a jumpbridge is in a system, eg. 8-1 would mean planet 8 moon 1 is where the jumpbridge portal is.

I know most people are going to be scratching their heads at this - so just have a look at the maps and imagine them as CC maps. You don't need to know what they are otherwise used for really.

Before people go "aaah copyright" etc... these maps are all made by the players((Also I know Sage Evo (and his map is based on dotlan anyway), and I'm not very close to the other cartographers who make the big maps... not that it matters since the maps are outdated/updated almost every second week.)), and the jumpbridges (playermade gateways) are planned by players also, and not part of the developers regional design.

So has anyone tried copying a specific region of eve? (I know that whole of eve and even the north is way too big)
And is it possible to make a map with the design of these regions, or would it not work gameplay wise?

What do you guys think? Impossible? Am I mad to think I could try a project like this?

A very different alternative would be to use a political map of eve atm. Something like this: http://go-dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/ ... 050610.png or http://go-dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/ ... luence.png or http://www.eve-files.com/media/corp/CRII/Latest.jpg

For Draft Purposes I really have my heart set on the Fade/Pure Blind map (http://eve-wtf.com/maps/jbmap-fdpb.gif). It's big enough, and complex enough with the jumpbridges to make a good map for CC.

What I'm thinking in terms of gameplay is either bonuses based on constellation (see the dotlan map) or based on holding the jumpbridge lines (see fade/pureblind map) - also if you notice some systems are circles and others are squares. Squares designate Station systems (hence more valuable) and could give bonuses. Of course there would have to be some changes to cut off Tribute nicely, still this is just brainstorming, and I'm not going to commit any work until theres some feedback. I'll put up a 840x800 size version later. =P

So please tell me what you think.

Copyright I think... though nothing is stopping you from making a knock off.

And those maps are too huge... I can hardly get a full picture of what the map would look like.

I don't see how copyright would be an issue - these are not copyrighted images.

I've resized & cropped the map I'd like to use to 630x550 and 840x700. Please tell me if this would work.

The next step if people think this looks good is to change some connections and add in a bonus chart and removed the password/map key =P - remove the planet and moon indicators - remove entry systems (black circles) - and remove a few of the wine coloured systems in the top right hand corner.

The theme of this is obv. Spaceships and stuff. - each area is a star system, linked by an interstellar gate. How does this work, do I need a small map and a large one, or can I just do a large one?

Honestly the only thing holding me back right now, is that I'm unsure if people like this idea. I'd personally love to be able to do this. So please some more feedback? (I will giff cookies :D )

If you haven't already, take a look at this: viewtopic.php?f=466&t=40463

Other than that... this map is not very attractive with its colored shapes and connecting lines... maybe use stars or galaxies or something? The plain white background also needs to go. I think this map is going to be a hard sell as its just lines, letters and shapes. So your next step is to jazz it up and make it look like a real place.

Thanks for the link.

Hmm ok - do you mean like this?
I accidently the quality when making the background transparent, so you can't read anything now... - but it's a demonstration. I probably won't even use that exact background.

or do you mean a redesign to a territory based map? I feel that, the traditional style will not work for what I'm looking to do. The connected lines are actually what I'm going for (I'm not doing it because I feel it's easy to make), it's because it is inspired by the regions in eve... and this is how they are depicted... lines between star systems. I don't really see any other way to go about this. There isn't a way to have an interstellar based map without lines connecting the systems. Think about how Gal Civ, or sins of a solar empire work, masters of orion... or the many browser based "star strategy games". Stars are connected by lines to other stars =S.

Here are some examples of the style I'm trying to emulate. Look at these and you'll get an idea of the concept hopfully -

Other than "making it look nice" I can't see a different way to approach this... it's stars and gates between stars...
