Map of Hyborea

Postby kingpriam on Mon Aug 16, 2010 9:32 am

Has anyone thought of using a map of Hyborea before? I don't remember seeing it in the map list before but I'd definitely be an interesting one to play.

Well... the big issue is copyright. But it's been skated around successfully before, someone just has to get inventive enough.

And the other thing is... does anyone else think this map looks like a stylize map of Africa/Asia?

That's actually the first thing I noticed.

BK,
It is from the novel "Conan the Barbarian".

IH,
Yes it looks like Africa, India, and Asia, because it IS a map of what the world looked like in this region, 15,000 years ago. The book is nothing like the Schwartsnager movies. Conan was nothing like Arnold's portrayal. Think one step above cave man, then you start to get a feel of what the "Barbarian" was all about.

Robert E. Howard wrote the Conan stories way back in the twenties, He died sometime in the sixties I think, so all of this is Free domain.

I started a map on this subject a year ago. I was only in the early stages of my first drafts, when our resident map killer "mibi", came in and put an end to it. It seems that he was disappointed that Arnold was not included, so he trashed the hell out of it.

I still think that a good CC map can be made on this subject. I would be happy to revive this project, if I were to get the support.

natty was brand new to the forum at the time, and was helping out as I remember. Maybe he would want to partner up and get this map back on track.

I can help out here and there, although I don't think I can commit full-time to a new project at this point - as you know I have quite a few projects on my plate already ;)

Actually, it will be in public domain 70 years from the authors death. So if he died in 1960 then it will be public domain in 2030. Sorry but you will have another 20 years before you can actually use it verbatim.

It is 70 years in England, and 50 I think in Australia. And I do not know what it is in the USA. Would it not depend upon what country the work was published ?

70 years in the US, and I do not believe so since it would have been copy-written in the US as well.

He died in 1936 and the works are public domain in the UK, though I can't find anything about the US. The Conan the Barbarian theme is also not subject to the USA rules of 70 years after death as those rules were passed in 1973, thus making Conan subject to whatever rules he was under.

Okay so if it is in public domain then where is the problem?? Maybe someone needs to do a little more research on it?
