A New World: a project in cartography, Usergroup made!

So I have an idea for something big. Real big. I would like to assemble a team of various mapmakers, and a few other people, to completely design and construct a new fantasy world. Now I'm not talking about just one map here, I am proposing we create something which can be the basis for dozens of maps. We can get hundreds of maps from our real world, imagine the possibilities of a world designed with CC mapmaking in mind. People would have to be dedicated, really dedicated. A lot of rough maps would have to be made never to be used. A thousand years or more of history would have to be written (not every little bit, just essentials and highlights), famous stories created, people made up. At first it wouldn't have much of an applied point, at first we would just be building a base, building cultures, races, politics, anything that we have in our world. Then would come the first map. It would be a general, not 100% accurate overview of the planet, just like the original risk map. From there expansion could be rapid. Each continent would get its own map, so that is at least 5 maps right there, then major countries, which would be 10 -20 more, then war maps, region maps, mythological maps, historical maps, everything! We would have to take care to make sure there are no inconsistencies. No element of any map could contradict another or the whole thing would be messed up.
Right now it is sort of vague, but anyone interested? It is very ambitious, but it could be epic.
Note: to help with the building of the world, you don't need any experience in mapmaking.
Oh, and it would be a closed usergroup, because I really only want people who are serious about it.

Sounds like mibi's Epoch from 2-3 years ago. Same general idea, though mibi was planning on being the sole author of the maps. If this idea is still kicking in March, I create a mean mythology and history for fake regions.
EDIT: Proof

Hmmm.... maybe.
I partially think that there is enough in this world to make maps from, even if you go a little into fantasy.
I'm thinking about it... it could be cool.

Yeah I kinda got the idea from Mibi's Epoch, but that was like 9 people making parts which just make up one map. Which is big, but I am, wanting to go even bigger.

Count me in for ideas. I might be able to make maps if I can persuade my parents to get photoshop. Fingers crossed

you want to be careful not to bite off more than what is managable. given the nature of the foundry, it's speed and process, you might end up with a spruce goose.

I've been working on a map of a fantasy world of my own design... I have a world map sketched for it, if you like we can use it.

I agree with mibi. Too much = NEVER FINISHED
I would maybe be interested. Here is my suggestion
1- World map
4-6 Continent maps (based on word)
3-5 City/Region maps (based on strategic points in Content maps)
3-4 Building, fort, battle maps

possibly, But What I have found from other projects for school and stuff is that if you start with a big scope and pull it back, you end up with only the best ideas, but if you start small, you get less.

I'd be happy if this world is more than just generic fantasy, but reflects something more uniquely CC. Maybe this is the world Feudal War takes place in, or Siege!, or CCU. Maybe its history is modeled loosely after milestones in CC's development.

That's a great idea! We just need permission...

Thats a good idea...it can be the feudal one continent and one of the AoR other continent(like that you can make 3 maps...for each AoR or put also all AoR as 3 continents)...maybe midgard as a third continent....of course it woudnt be exactly the map but something more general with less territories, unless you are thinking something as big as World 3.0 was though

Nah... I don't think we can include that many maps that are already made... there would be inconsistencies...
Also, now that I think of it, including any already made maps might not be such a great idea. It would kinda limit the creativity of those making this imaginary world...
Anywho... when do we start?

I think that it wouldn't be that hard to incorporate them into the new world.

Well, maybe... but it would place some limits on what can and can be done... plus it would be a hassle to get permission from all of the mapmakers...
Also another issue is scale: we don't exactly know the scale all the maps already made are in... so if we're to incorporate any maps into this new world the mapmaker needs to be cooperating with the project...
Maybe I'm just nitpicking here but I just feel details like these are important...

Well, if we don't get permission, obviously we won't use a map. But the idea isn't to build around maps that already exist, but to keep them on hand as puzzle pieces that we can fit where convenient, as a handy homage.

We can wait a bit until the Foundry comes fully online, but from this thread it looks like we're starting right now.
So, what will this new world be called?

I'll leave the names for someone who's good with stuff like that...
but, I have an idea that I think we could use somewhere:
A map that's in two parts: the corporeal world and the "dream world" or astral plane. The "real world" map would have shamans or magicians, or perhaps magical portals that can be used to access the astral plane... The real world would be regular territories and maybe bonus regions, but the astral plane would have considerably different gameplay, such as: evil spirits (with bombardments) and spiritual guides (which give bonuses or autodeploys if held) and all kinds of other stuff that can be worked out.
I've been thinking about this idea for a while, but here's a good opportunity to make something of it...

We also need to decide if we're building this world from the top down -- the world map first and then smaller bits -- or, say, start out making a few continents and countries and then extrapolate the entire world from them.

We could make 6 maps each representing part of the globe. The edges would be connected like a cube folded up...
Whatever you do I wish you luck. I might contribute to this if I find time.
