Cuba!

Postby sbartimaes on Sun Sep 05, 2010 10:36 am

I am working on a cuban map from the 1950s. I will have a map up soon. The goal is to unify the entire country, which is divided into a few small regions. There is a "Sea Power" region that can attack and be attacked by any region, and the player gets a bonus by capturing the "International Aid" region that can only by attacked via "Sea Power". Because there are very few regions and it would not be practicable for more than 3 players, I moved the aim from complete domination to controlling the sea. I would also like to add some other, small island nations and central american nations to the map.

Hey, sounds like a neat idea! I'd love to see a draft so I can understand the concept a bit more.

Why is the land area so small?

ok I think this idea has potential but I don't think the map you have shown here is really viable. First of all there's only 17 territories, I think small maps are fine but 17 is microscopic. On top of that 6 of the territories are choke points. Again I think choke points are fine but this whole map is just one big choke point. The bonus values are completely out of whack. +7 for 5 territories that are dependable from 3? I suggest you look at some of your favorite maps and count the territories and borders of each bonus region then compare it to it's worth. That should give you a clearer idea of what appropriate values might be.

I'm sorry if this comes of as harsh but I think you should do another larger version, because playing a game on this map would only last 2 or 3 turns before the objective is completed. But like I said, with has potential and done correctly this would be the type of map I would play.

Cuba is limited in its actual amount of land, but I would definitely like to add some other, likely island, territories. Thanks for the comments!

that's not what I mean. You have huge amounts of wasted space on the map.

A tiny swath of land, with lots of useless ocean around it.

I guess what I'm asking is why don't you zoom in so the land area fills the whole map?

Also like someone already said, you don't have enough territories. When you zoom in to the land, you'll have more room to divide the land into more territories.

I would rather see a bay of pigs map... you could have rebals... secret agents... military... castro.

As a map I think Cuba would be a been there, we have 100{s of that type of map.

I think this could be viable.
You'll need to zoom in on the land, and create more regions.
You could maybe use the seas as bonus-less regions too. Or you could set up sea routes with killer neutrals, or decay.

This is all off memory, so I'm not committing to anything that I say here.

BUT! the actual Cuban Revolution (where Fidel and Che eventually took over the government) was launched from the Gulf Coast. I think they originally planned it all in Mexico, and Fidel bought a boat to take his revolutionaries to the island. From there, they hid in the hills winning support from local farmers and peasants, until they were strong enough to oust the US and their puppet Cuban government. There is a lot of rich revolutionary history to draw upon.

Some Ideas that I have:
  • Have all players start in Mexico, and have to invade Cuba, kinda like Dos Schlob.
  • Make the goal to "Liberate Cuba." That way it is more friendly to all the countries CC is played.
  • Involve the US or Puppet government somehow. US tourism districts may be a good idea. If you don't have room on the map, you could have a map inset. City's like Havana would be good for this. An example of a map with an inset.
  • Bonuses for capturing territories where Peasants lived in the 1950s since that is where the support was?

You definitely want more territories. Here's some examples of small island maps:

You know what could make this idea really interesting? The Bay of Pigs invasion. I think it would be fun to have gameplay aspects unique to a failed invasion - something that would make this map really unique. It's a bit of a step from the map already posted, but you could stll think about it.

I agree that a Bay of pigs map would be awesome. Here's a sarcastic sketch.

However, what we need to know is if OP still wants to make a map?

we could make it so theirs like Florida in the upper corner and have a boat in between a coast guard with like a beam of light and have like 3 boats in there and each one is minus one guy. Then have a boat outside of the beam and that is worth one troop or something like this
