Ok, my prime-thread hasnt taken off yet even if Bogan has cracked the first one and gotten the ball rolling, so ill start another one math-based as it ought to be some good math-brains in this community, keep it kind of simple so anyone could get the answer using pure logic and simple maths and maybe thisone can get a greater following, once someone has cracked your riddle you tell them (in thread) that it is correct and they get to post a new riddle..

EDIT; ITT puzzles and riddles in general mathbased or otherwise

ok ill start;

* The number is less than 50
* It is a composite number (not a prime)
* The number is even
* The sum of the digits is 10
* The difference between the digits is 6

what is the number?

That seems correct.

Try this one.

Name all the series that work for

A * B * C = A + B + C

Can you take a large number, say 43958272908
And determine if it is divisible by 11 from the following method: by just going from left to right adding and subtracting alternate digits, and seeing if that number is divisible by 11.

4-3+9-5+8-2+7-2+9-0+8=33

33/11=3

43958272908 is divisible by 11 :)

Ok let get this thread back on track with some lateral thinking riddles, feel free to guess the solution ill scroll through and announce the winner who may post a new riddle..

In a town in italy lives a rich and powerful merchant who has the area in a chokehold and loves to indulge in sadistic games on the expense of the townspeople.
In this town there also lives a carpenter who on the brink of ruin borrows money from the rich merchant to save his family. The carpenter has a very beautiful daughter and the merchant asks for her as collateral for the loan. (ive shortened this a bit) but basically the carpenter refuses but the daughter agrees to save her family.
The merchant adds a huge interest to the loan and the carpenter realizes that he will never be able to pay it back.
The merchant lives in a huge mansion with a beautiful walkway and courtyard filled with imported black and white stones and every spring he holds a grand party for the town to show off all his riches.
To liven up this party he decides to give the carpenter (whos destiny is now known by everyone in town) a chanse to win back his daughter if only she can pick a white stone from a bag. There is a 50% chance she will be freed and the debt written off but if she picks the black stone she will become the merchants slave forever. The daughter again agrees to this.
On the day of the party the merchant makes a big scene proclaiming his generosity and saying that even though this carpenter cant pay his debts he will give his daughter a last shot at freedom, by placing two stones from his lovely courtyard in a bag, and if the daughter can pick the white stone she will go free.
With grand gestures he picks up two stones and puts in the bag but to the daughter he shows that they are both black with a sadistic smile (no-one in the crowd sees this)

How did the daughter get out of this mess free and also rendering her father free of debt?

The daughter tells both of them to take one stone from the bag. She asks the merchant to show his stone, then exclaims that since he has the black stone, she must have the white stone.

Certainly.

Let's start off with a classic, shall we?

You come across a fork in the road, one leads to the town where you need to go, and the other leads straight to hell. Standing there are two brothers. One always tells the truth, the other always lies. You can only ask one question to either brother. What question do you ask?

You are not retarded, although you did miss

-1, -2, and -3 (negatives work as well)

0,0,0 is acceptable as mentioned by the next poster, since it could be that A=B=C

You ask one of the brothers, "If I'd ask your brother if this is the road that leads to the good town, would he agree?"
Then you ask the other one, "If I'd ask your brother which road leads to the good town, which would he say?"

The untruthful brother would lie while answering honestly and say his brother say to take the wrong route, while the truthful brother would answer truthfully, saying his lying brother would say to take the wrong road. So both brothers would point to the road to Hell — take the other path.

actually for this one you only need to ask one of the brothers one question, and that would be; where would your brother tell me to go if i asked for the way to town?
same logic, you just do the opposit of what whoever answers tells you to do and cuts out a bit of tediuos conversation;)
but the answer is correct and if you have a nice riddle/puzzle its your time to bowl mate. (we dont pitch in UK we bowl.) ;)

Cheap way to do it is to ask a brother what colour your shirt is, then ask the other which one of those roads lead to the town. Depending on what the first brother answered about your shirt, you would deduce whether the second brother is the lier or not, then take the according path to the town.

Ahh... another good ol' classic...

I would answer, but I feel like it's too soon... if we get enough people, I think we should limit people to only be able to do 1 question and answer per page.
