Who are the people responsible for implementing suggestions, if they get taken forward?

Seems like Suggestions threads fill up with all sorts of people commenting, but almost never get input from anyone who can actually do anything to action them.

Is Suggestions just a place where ideas go to do, or is there someone, somewhere who actually reviews them?

i think when ideas are inherently bad or would impede the enforcement of the rules or the teams ability to pursue complaints in games, etc... you know, such as making chat private in games, they just let them die down and fade away... however, users may continue to bump threads, rage against the dying light, continue to battle windmills and even post links in other forums directing others to the original thread (yeah, that happened yesterday... had not seen that in YEARS)... just because they ignore you, does not mean you have to fade away... many users pursued the admins for YEARS to get together guidelines for bigotry/racism on the site (just an example)... rage on, rage against the machine!!! refuse to fade away!!!-Jésus noir

Not any more. The current head of the Suggestions Team has not logged in for 7 months, and nobody is willing to step up and fill his shoes, so for all practical purposes the position is vacant and there has been no formal review of the suggestions in at least 7 months.

Before that it was spotty. Unfortunately, the people who actually implement the suggestions have rarely participated in discussing them. Lackattack did, in the very early days, but soon grew weary of the task. As far back as the 7th of November 2007, lack appointed a mod to triage the suggestions and started insulating himself from the process. By late 2008 or early 2009, lack had stopped participating in the suggs forum entirely. Subsequent webmasters -- El Jefe and bigWham -- have likewise not participated in the process and counted on the Suggestions Team to pre-qualify the suggestions and bring them forward.

There have been at least 8 and I think possibly 10 heads of the Suggs Team over the years -- jennifermarie, sully800, rdsrds2120, chapcrap, agentcom, metsfanmax, Foxglove, and JamesKer1 that I know of, and I think 1 or 2 others that I missed. All of them at some point managed to get some suggestions approved, but there have always been at least 20 rejected or failed suggestions for every one that has passed through the system. There's a basic conflict: the community thinks the job of the Suggs Team is to get as many suggestions as possible approved, but the webmasters think the job of the Suggs Team is to reject as many suggestions as possible and only pass on the best of the best. The stress of trying to satisfy those conflicting expectations from above and below is, I think, why the position has had such a high turnover.

The tl;dr answer: No, at present nobody is reviewing the suggestions, and that isn't likely to change until some strong and well-organized personality steps forward and volunteers to take on the very thankless job of Suggs Team Leader.

Sure, all over that, I don't care if some pointy head gets mad at me 'cause I booted their idea. What's the guideline on passing your own suggestion?

The guideline is that you have to have the salesmanship to make the boss care about your suggestion. Previous experience selling vacuum cleaners for a living is definitely an asset.

I thought Owen made all the decisions on suggestions, that's if he's not to busy sorting out C&A cases.

I used to have a job selling vaccuum cleaners - but I quit before I ever sold any.
Does that make me qualified?

I've been around every few weeks or so, just to check in and see if there's anything I'd like to return full time for.

But as for now, I've grown weary of tracking mud through the bosses house to sell him all those vacuums he doesn't have the time or desire to use :)

I understand the sentiment, but if you've grown weary of the task, you should at least try to recruit an apprentice to take over the business.

I used to sell lawnmowers, and was once invited to be a mod for suggestions. Now I mostly just mention it as an anecdote. Owen goes a bit weird when I talk about it though, so all I'll add is that I'm a leading candidate.

I think this is the main issue. Why would you want to waste your time volunteering for a "for profit site" when there is no hope anything will get done.

There are lots of great suggestions there. I dont even bother posting or reading there any more. As you say- its futile.

I think the key is what the site wants to be. It needs a mission statement and a basic plan as to how to move toward it.

Plenty of players and posters here are willing to devote time, but to what end?

pretty sure bigworms mission statement is to extract as much $$$ from this place as he can with the least amount of effort from his end before this place crashes and burns, sym. that's my take, but what do you think?

how much time are you really willing to commit, when you have only played 73 games since '07? some of us actually PLAY games and PAY for memberships to contribute to the continuation of the site (your current one was gifted and has not been utilized)... your rate of commitment (to the site, not institutions), is about the same as the Suggestions Forum... *cough*... the black jesus has cracked wise...-Jésus noir

I've got no idea what the aim of the owner is. If I had to guess, I suspect it's pretty laissez-faire.

The game has a devoted core of people, and retro-gaming is in fashion, but there's a dilemma. Too many changes will alienate the people who want the site to be fossilised. Too few changes and new people won't join and there's stagnation. Hence a kind of limbo state.

Perhaps your post should tell you something. Playing games isn't the be all an end all of the site. Community, and that means something bigger than just playing, is important too. Dismissing people as irrelevant based on their number of games seems like a short sighted attempt to bolster an increasingly irrelevant hierarchy whereby new ideas can be dismissed.

In doing so, Owen, you often come across as if you need to portray ideas that you disagree with in terms of cartoons and big red letters.

If you posted this 5 years ago, I'd agree. But now? Seriously? If you're still here and not playing games, what are you here for? This closet bare forum community that hates itself? Why cling to a sinking ship [insert useless youtube clip of the titanic sinking]?

In asking the question, you've answered it. As you've pointed out, I have an attachment to the site. I'd like to see it be better. I like it, and would like it to go on, improve, and be open.

Sometimes the simplest answers are the best.
