I looked around for a tutorial, but if one exists, I couldn't find it.
How does freestyle strategy differ than playing sequentially? Is there any hazards to look out for or benefits to take advantage of?

Here is the CC explanation:
Play Order
In a sequential game player 1 is first, then player 2, then player 3, etc. Sequential games are slower but straightforward. When playing a sequential game with teams the order is staggered, alternating between teams.
In a freestyle game it doesn't matter in which order players take their turns. Players can even play simultaneously! After the last player takes his turn, a new round begins immediately. To keep things fair, the last player (or team) to end their turn in each round is blocked from taking a second back-to-back turn and must wait until either an opponent begins their turn or half of the round passes.

you really need to be online alot.
Try to manipulate end of rounds so you are online.
Patience, dont kill someone just so you can kill them. It has to lead to something more.

Think about when you should take your turn, timing is key. Manipulate when rounds end.
Say you can grab a big bonus but it's easy to break afterwards, waiting till the end of a round then taking it and waiting till somebody else plays their turn so you can cash in is a big move.

Turn order is even more important in trench than it would be in normal freestyle.

You're lucky, because so far only genuinely good tips have been given! I'll add the most obvious one: the best freestyle player is always online.
Of course you can't always be online, but keep this in mind. It'll help process the losses and if you're able to be online a lot, you'll notice it'll gain you a significant advantage towards your opponents. And yes, this will win you some games if you play it out well.
Once upon a time I played a lot of freestyle games with loads of time on my hands and I had a huge win %. If I try it nowadays, I'm not even winning the bare minimum, because I join the action when it's too late. Time is important, 's all I'm saying!

Timing is key - yes. If you are the first to take a turn do you jump in and take the +4 bonus or wait until others have taken their turns and you get a +15 bonus? If you can take someone out and take their cards then it's a good idea to take the low paying 1st set - but if you can wait....who knows.
It's also a good idea to avoid players like x-roads and Dragon Dor because they have got this down to a pat and usually win.

The best way I have found to play freestyle is: 2 person game, esc, trench. It is almost sequential with a 12 hour limit. Then try and make sure your opponent is off line when you play. And accept the fact that you will not get the first turn.
By the way, if you haven't figured it out yet, I hate freestyle because I can't be on enough to have a chance.
Any body else with ideas on how to make freestyle play like sequential.
