Symbols, images and flags

I got a Global Chat ban at least partially for using a swastika. If we completely ignore the fact that the swastika is a symbol of peace for a couple of billion people, and pretend for a moment that I posted that Nazi swastika and intended it to be taken like that, then why is it a bannable offence to post a swastika but not a confederate flag, rising sun flag, USAAF symbol or any other image associated with atrocities and human rights violations?

I picked those three because I have seen all three used in avatars, signatures and/or individual posts. I'm sure there are more.

On a side note, if you're a North American or European who can't tell the difference between a Nazi swastika and the Buddhist one then you really are a cretin. Don't all Westerners study the Nazis in history class?

As far as I know we do, and I agree with your above mentioned statements.

Interesting that you chose to put the USAAF symbol along side the Nazi swastika as if there is some moral equivalence. There is not.
As to your question...I would argue that the swastika symbolizes, in the minds of many, the killing millions of people and horrific atrocities. The others do not rise to that level at least in the minds of many. The swastika, rightly or not, represents one of the worst moments in human history.

Is there any chance that you did so in an attempt to spark discussion about the rules rather than because you were actually talking about the swastika?

I would argue that could be a matter of perspective. Take Japan. They did not suffer genocide at the hands of the Nazis. They did suffer horrible casualties when the USAAF dropped nuclear bombs on their major cities. We don't have awful memories of those bombings because we didn't experience it, and it helped us win the war. They remember it much more negatively, for obvious reasons.

The world doesn't revolve around American sensibilities. Remember that next time you're arguing about which symbols should be banned or allowed.

Bollocks.

It's not a question of which group did worse things. Ask a European which group was worse and they'll probably say the Nazis. Ask a Chinese or Korean and they'll say imperial Japan. Ask a Vietnamese or maybe quite a few Japanese and they'll say the USAAF. Ask a black American or liberal mouth breather and they might say the Confederacy. The point is that all those symbols are associated with atrocities, so why ban one while allowing others?

(edit: just saw Serbia's post saying basically the same thing. Will leave mine here anyway)

Yes, AND let's not forget the 50 MILLION Native AMericans (96% population extermination) that were killed off by both bounty, oppression, and germ warfare!

f*ck! WHY EVEN WAVE OR DISPLAY ANY FLAGS FROM EUROPE OR AMERICA!!!!????

Ok...I'm calm now. I just needed to get that off my chest. That was a long time ago...things can be forgiven (not necessarily forgotten)...these are new times ahead of us. Feel free to wave whatever little symbol you would like, BUT (and here's the BIG BUT!) DO NOT DO THE SAME SHIT THAT YOU FUCKING DID BACK IN THE DAYS WHEN MY GRANDPA USED A BUCKSKIN RUBBER, YOU FUCKING RACIST REDNECK FUCKS!~ The World is on to your old school antics.

Good day, sir!

The estimates are that around 11 million slaves were shipped across the Atlantic. Between 10 -20% died during the voyage.
If you are referring to The Maafa then the numbers vary quite a bit and some are not overly credible although I will grant you it is a large number. One big difference between between the other groups mentioned and the black slave trade is that it was other blacks who fed the trade.

We can agree to disagree. There is no moral equivalency between the two. In case you forgot, the Japanese ATTACKED us and declared war on us. Their casualties were a result of their own actions. The Jews did not declare war on the Nazi's.
I suspect that most Japanese know why we resorted to dropping the bombs. Their leadership left us no choice. Better that then trying to kill every last one of them...

Well, Adolf would beg to differ. The bankers (of which were of the said Jewish persuasion) yanked their funding for the first World War; thusly, helping the demise and the utter peter-out of German aggression. (Of course, this was only Hitler's own opinion via Mein Kampf).

You realize that today, wiping out civilian targets would be considered a war crime, right? And you're saying our choices were between killing between 130,000 and 240,000 CIVILIANS, or killing "every last one of them"? Genocide much? But it's cool, it ended the war in our favor, therefore we get to determine how it's remembered. And don't be an idiot, most Japanese are not going to be on our side about that.

For the record, I don't think any symbol should be banned.

Bollocks.

The St George flag (English Flag) has been abused by the English Defence League who are a far right anti immigration group who are both racist and outright dumb.

This wont stop me from being proud to be English, but it does stop me from hoisting a flagpole outside my house and hoisting the St George.

Partially correct 8-) .
After WWII a large group of southern Democrats left the party and started the Dixiecrats. The confederate battle flag became very prominent in the Dixiecrat campaign for 1948 presidential election. That is when it began to fly again in the south. However, during the civil rights movement, you began to see more and more displays of the flag. In 1962 the state of South Carolina put the Confederate battle flag atop the capital.
