Can anyone point me to an intro or FAQ for this map? I'm playing it for the first time as part of the July challenge, and after an hour I'm still just staring at thinking "wtf wtf wtf wtf". Thanks.

I know for a fact that no strategy guide has ever been posted, because I'm lost on the map too and I've been in your position searching for one...
With a bit of luck some of the people who know the map will weigh in here.

I don't know the map well, but I'd recommend playing a bunch of bot games on it until you figure it out.

Ponteaus, go to settings (Its a tab on the left) and enable panels. It will then show you how each territory attacks the others. That should help a bit.
I've never played this map so cant help with strategy.

Each player has one base.
Either humans or aliens.
If you want to eliminate a player you only need to take his base.
To take a human base you need first to take a DNA lab ( red territory) from DNA lab you can attack one of this 4 TBIO / TGEO / TCON / TSOC. Then once you take one of them( doesn't matter which one) the next tech, it's a 2 neutral, then you take the next one it's a 8 neutrals, either STO / VOLC / DEMO / BRAIN, from one of these 4 regions you can attack a human base.
To take an alien base it's the same but on opposite side, first take a nuke silo ( yellow territ) then take a 4 neutral, a 2 neutral, a 8 neutral, then you can take an alien.
So because if you lose your base you are eliminated directly, even if you still have a lot of other territory, you should keep a significant stack on your base.
Basic strategy would be so stack on your base until you have enough to take all the neutrals then kill your opponent.
Since you are playing sunny it should be easy to know.
Extra remarks :
Easiest bonus to take is from your base to take a tech level 1. Small problem, if you are human, all other human can attack the same tech level 1 than you. And same if you are alien.
That's the basic of the map.

No, I hadn't looked at his games. Don't know why he didn't think to do the same thing for this map.

You can't play bot games on AYBABTU - the map's too complex for the bots.

Simplified but correct. Watching your opponents move usually dictates your best strat. Just finished a dubs game on it and cleared my opponent at the start of round 6 when they made no effort to oppose my run to tech level 3.

Donelladan posted a good answer. Unfortunately, any post about "how to play AYB" will either be extremely long or very simplified. I'm going to post some more simplified stuff. (Source: played it a few times)
Two key principles:
- There are 3 ways to win, none of which are the "usual" way of completely eliminating your opponent.
- Every principle on this map has a "flip side." (E.g.; the implication of Principle 1 is that you must always keep in mind that there are three ways of losing.)
Three ways to win
- (very common) Eliminate your opponent's base. Achieved by heading down the "opposite" tech tree, as explained by Donelladan.
- (common) Take the four tech resources that are on the bottom row of one of the tech trees. Achieved by taking a similar path as above but heading one more row down and then across.
- (rare) Hold a base of one type (human or alien) and all 4 of the "opposite" tech tree entrances (labs or silos, respectively).
- (never) NOT a way to win: Eliminate all of your opponent (unless you happen to eliminate his base last, which almost certainly means you could have won earlier).
Thus, three ways to lose:
- Not keeping enough troops on your base to survive opponent's attack
- Not paying attention to log and letting opponent hold tech resources
- Somehow managing to allow opponent to control all labs/silos
Some other things to keep in mind
Special attack routes
- Bases to first level of "same" tech
- Tech level 1 row 1 (abbreviated "tech level 1.1") can ONLY attack corresponding tech level 1.2
- Tech level 1.2 can ONLY attack laterally but can also bombard "regular" territories.
- Labs/silos to second level of "opposite" tech
- These level 2.1 territs can ONLY attack straight up (to level 1.2) or straight down (level 2.2)
- Tech level 2.2 can ONLY attack laterally or down (level 3.1)
- Tech level 3 to all "opposite" bases or straight down to tech 3.2
- Troops in bottom row (level 3.2) can only attack laterally (can't attack out)
Bonuses
- Holding both rows of a column in the first or second tech level (NOT the third level)
- labs/silos autodeploy +1
- bases autodeploy +2
- Standard bonus at 12, 15, etc. territs

Didn't even know about that one
