Basics that you need to know.
Continent bonus are held by individuals and not by teams.
Turns are taken in order as per normal games.
You can attack each other as per normal games.
You can reinforce and deploy on your teammates if you so choose.
You can only attack with your own troops.
Riskllama is correct, there is teamchat in the game via the tickbox so you can chat away without your opponents reading it.

Some people, who are medal hunters will join a lot of games with random teammates to get the teammate medal...its not usually a good way to obtain or maintain a high score or have fun game play.
