Interview with Ryall55
This week we had the chance to talk with organizer and player, Ryall55. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with drake_259. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
Now, on with the interview.
Q: Hello, Ryall55.
A: Hi, Gozar
Q:How did you find this website?
A: Well, I enjoy playing risk in real life, and typed it into a search engine
Q: Why did you join CC?
A: Because I enjoyed playing risk in real life and wanted the challenge of playing well online.
Q:Why did you start to play tournaments?
A: For the competition and also the different formats in tournaments.
Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?
A: Medals No ummmm probably because I enjoyed entering them I fancied having a go myself.
Q: How long have you been organizing tournaments?
A: Probably about 2 months now.
Q:What tournament did you first run?
A: Its called 'Become the Ultimate Assassin' and its currently in Round 6
Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?
A: My mind and a few outside influences.
Q: Who do you look to for inspiration when organizing your tournaments?
A: People like Op, Gilligan and Natewolfman (successful organizers)
Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.
A: Entered: Really enjoyed it, playing against others for that one spot.
Run: Well I am really enjoying but its a lot more work than it looks
Q: How many tournaments have you run already, and do you have a goal in mind for how many you want to run in total before you "retire"? How many are you running right now?
A: Currently finished 0, Running 6 and will retire when I lose interest in running them.
Q:What tournaments have you organized?
A: Become the ultimate assassin
Simple yet Fun Tournaments
Football Firms 'Who's the best'
Live Once- Die Twice
Freemium with a Premium Doubles
Freemiums and Premiums Tournament
Q:What is your favourite tournament you have run?
A: Become the Ultimate assassin
Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in? Why?
A: Probably either the Point Grabbers, or Marfski’s 'Biggest Fish' Tournament
Q:Do you prefer to run or enter tournaments?
A: Entering is more fun, but running has more of a challenge.
Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite?
A: Ummmm, probably bracket tournaments. I prefer them because you can see who you’re facing and have in my mind a better chance of winning.
Q: Do you find it easier to choose tournament settings yourself, or to let the players customize them?
A: Do them myself, but in two of my tournaments they can choose there settings.
Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?
A: Umm I would say I’m in about 5/6/7. And used to play about 70 games at a time, but limit myself to 20ish now because I’m running tournaments.
Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?
A: Very, was a good feeling to win one
Q:Have you ever won a tournament?
A: No
Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?
A: Getting through to a semi final and losing to MEK.
Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?
A: One with a good theme and is enjoyable.
Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?
A: There are to many to say
Q:Have you ever been disappointed in a tournament you have run? What about one you entered?
A: Yes, by having too many drop-outs in tournaments I run. And probably a MLB tournament which had so much running for it and then was abandoned
Q: What makes a successful organizer?
A: Someone who finishes it and updates often.
Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?
A: By having a different theme too them. Even though I’m not amazingly creative.
Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?
A: Not really, except the time it takes up.
Q: For you, what is the best part of being a tournament organizer?
A: Seeing players getting involved in the tournaments, with banter etc.
Q: What mistakes do you see tournament organizers make the most?
A: Well putting just the game number rather than a link to the game, it seems players prefer the link
Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?
A: Not sending the pm to everyone
Making all of the games either freestyle or sequential wrongly
Q:What is your opinion on organizer neutrality? Should organizers be allowed to place themselves against their own clanmates in tournaments? Should organizers be allowed to join their own tournaments at all?
A: I reckon organisers should be allowed to play in there own tournaments, and play against clanmates as long as there is no cheating or letting the other player go through.
Q: Do you use a "schedule" for updating your tournaments, or do you just wait until they need an update?
A: Wait until they need an update
Q: Should “question marks” be allowed to join tournaments?
A: Yes, as long as they enter their games and don’t deadbeat.
Q:Do you feel it is better to give a bye to players whose opponents deadbeats the tournament, or to use a reserve?
A: Depends on the format of the tournament really.
Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?
A: The feedback system, I really liked the old one, but the new one is alright
Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?
A: Not having to enter the names of everyone individually. Maybe just highlight the whole list.
Q: If you are thinking purely on balance of tournament games is there anything you would want changing?
A: Nope.
Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?
A: Well I would tell them its a great experience, but to make sure they have time for the tournaments
Q: List your top 5 biggest tournament headache's to this point
A: 1. Messing up PM's
2. deadbeats
3. ------------------
4. -----------------
5. -----------------
Q:How much time does CC take from your day?
A: Probably a good few hours. More if I have nothing to do
Q:Are you a member of any clans or usergroups?
A: Yes, I’m the leader of a relatively new Clan called: MARVEL/DC HEROES
Q: Why did you pick the name Ryall55?
A: Well when I joined Bebo it gave me that username and I have used it on most things ever since.
Q:Where are you from?
A: Buckinghamshire, England
Q:Favourite play colour?
A: Blue
Q: Who is your favorite tournament organizer (excluding yourself)?
A: Probably Natewolfman
Q:Favourite and least favourite map?
A: Favourite is probably SEIGE!
Least Favourite is 8 Thoughts
Q:Favourite settings?
A: SEIGE!, chained, no cards, sunny
Q:Freestyle or sequential?
A: Sequential
Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?
A: I have a few ideas (which I’m keeping secret) due to that I’m not running them for a while until I finish most of my other ones
Q: Thank you for your time.
A: No problem
