Interview with poptartpsycho18
This week we had the chance to talk with organizer and player, poptartpsycho18. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with Ryall55. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
Now, on with the interview.
Q: Hello, poptartpsycho18.
A: Gozar….at last we meet……..giggle.
Q:How did you find this website?
A: I'd been searching for a site that would give me the opportunity to play against real people, instead of a computer. For a long time I didn't find anything, so when I found CC, I was ecstatic.
Q: Why did you join CC?
A: At first because it was free . Then I became a premium member because I couldn't get enough.
Q:Why did you start to play tournaments?
A: Well at first I was satisfied w/ just playing the games for themselves, but soon I wanted to play with a goal in mind. I wanted to try to have something to show for the effort I was putting into playing.
Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?
A: Several things. I wanted to try it, and I was loopy on no sleep when I got my first idea. It was also an "I could do that" attitude that went away fast when I found out it was so much harder than it seemed.
Q: How long have you been organizing tournaments?
A: I'm a absolute baby at this; I've only been doing it for about 3 months.
Q:What tournament did you first run?
A: My first tournament was the "Ladies of CC vs. the Gentlemen of CC". I got so many great players in that tournament. I'm still grateful to this day at the support that was given and offered.
Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?
A: I'd say that most of my ideas come when I'm either high on sugar, low on sugar or when I've been awake for a few days.
Q: Who do you look to for inspiration when organizing your tournaments?
A: There are so many talented tournament organizers on this site. To name a few, I would have to say that Natewolfman, Sir. Ricco, White Moose along with two new great organizers Marfski and MEK, both inspire and challenge me to come up with new and interesting ideas.
Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.
A: The first tournament I played in was the "My House, My Rules" tournament. 1v1 best of 5, and I was playing against White Moose. After I beat him a few times and he kept saying "It's luck" I will admit that I was getting pissed off. Didn't like him much at that point. But I will say that he's grown on me. I know now that he's a pretty funny guy and great to play against.
Running my first tournament was an eye opener. It's hard. You realize that just because you send the games, the players are real people, w/ their own real lives and they're going to do things at their pace & on their schedule, despite yours. You have to have so much patience and understanding. You also have to be sure that you clarify EVERYTHING! I had a lot of conflicts during the tournament because of the way I'd set it up and I wanted everyone to be happy. I spent so much time trying to keep everyone happy that the fun of running the tournament was going away. I finally realized that it was impossible to please everyone, and that's when I started to enjoy myself again , and to do things the way I intended to all along.
Q: How many tournaments have you run already, and do you have a goal in mind for how many you want to run in total before you "retire"? How many are you running right now?
A: I have one completed and 4 currently ongoing. I would prefer not to specify a number, because I am a serious believer in the "jinx" factor. I figure I'll stop when it's not fun anymore, or when I've run out of ideas. Whenever, it won't be permanent retirement.
Q:What tournaments have you organized?
A: Completed: Ladies of CC vs. the Gents of CC, winner: fwblb
Ongoing: Best Movie Ever, CC Ed., Terminator Madness, "The Mole" & "Celebrity Mole"
Q:What is your favourite tournament you have run?
A: Ladies of CC vs. the Gents of CC. I met so many cool people . Plus I enjoyed putting the guys in their place
Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in? Why?
A: I've enjoyed most of the tournaments I've played in; it's hard to pick one. But if I had to I'd pick White Moose's "Got the Skill's" tournament. I really, really, REALLY wanted to win that one!! I also enjoyed max is gr8's "Bloodthirst" tournament. It reminded me how much I really enjoy terminator games.
Q:Do you prefer to run or enter tournaments?
A: Entering them. Now that I understand the amount of responsibility and work that goes into them I rather play footloose and fancy free, then having the stress that is bound to come with running a tournament. Not that I don't enjoy the feeling I get in having completed the tournament successfully......
Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite?
A: For both organizing and playing I prefer 1-on-1 games. But I know that sometimes you have so many players that that just isn't possible. I always want to make my games w/o cards, because I can't stand the potential surprises that come w/ cards, but in tournament games that could take forever! So in tournaments I tend to prefer Seq., Esc., Chained forting and I could care less if it's sunny or not.
Q: Do you find it easier to choose tournament settings yourself, or to let the players customize them?
A: It's hard making those choices. The wrong ones can either have people signing up in droves or not even giving you tournament a second glance. But it has to be done . I compromise by giving the players the right to chose what the settings/map will be for the "Final" game.
Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?
A: I'm in a RIDICULOUS amount of tournaments I've tried to cut back lately though. I figured it was time when I could no longer put games in my game queue . If I had to count it would take forever so I'll just estimate and say that I'm in about 30 .....probably more though.
Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?
A: I thought it was the best thing ever I vaguely remember doing a little jig and a lot of trash talking to my computer screen. Along the lines of: "That's right, you better recognize, yadda yadda", basically a bunch of nonsense
Q:Have you ever won a tournament?
A: ......Yeah.....one.....I had been on a bad streak and was wearing a cooks hat. I signed up for Natewolfman's "Battle of the Ranks: Cooks".......And I know he has got to have had some obligations keeping him from sending games in a timely fashion, because the tourney took so long that by the time I won it I was a SFC and my opponent was a CFC, I had honestly forgotten about the whole tournament until I went into my inbox and there was a PM from Nate w/ the "final" game!
Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?
A: While I've lost a huge amount of games in many.....many tournaments , I can honestly say that none were truly disappointing because I tried my best. If I lost, I lost. In the end it's a game and I've never really been a sore loser.
Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?
A: One where you had fun playing, even if you got kicked in the 1st or second round.
Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?
A: That's a pretty broad question there. Off the top of my head I'd have to say that I'm liking how Sir. Ricco is running his tournaments (Tournament 100 is my fav of his), Gilligan is cool with his and amazzony is always great. But Marfski and MEK are keeping me entertained with theirs most of all.
Q:Have you ever been disappointed in a tournament you have run? What about one you entered?
A: I have no regrets. I'll admit that there are a few that need to be worked on, but we're all constantly learning the best ways to do this. Everyone is bound to make a few mistakes, and as long as it's used to improve the way you'll run your next tournament then it can end up being a good thing.
Q: What makes a successful organizer?
A: A successful organizer in my opinion is someone who does their best to keep the tournament running smoothly, and keeps their players updated and happy, but at the same time doesn't allow themselves to be dissuaded in how they want their tournament to progress.
Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?
A: I think it's mostly a creative idea that gets them to read your thread. Whether it appeals is down to that player. Premium prizes don't hurt either . But for the most part I think it's to show your skills and bragging rights are the best
Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?
A: Rounding up missing players. I always feel bad when players delay the game from starting. I know sometimes it can't be helped, but still, I feel bad for those players that are waiting.
Q: For you, what is the best part of being a tournament organizer?
A: The POWER! To quote gcwca_4_life: BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA:twisted:
Q: What mistakes do you see tournament organizers make the most?
A: I'm guilty of it myself: Not informing the players of the progress in the tournament or updating the tournament thread often enough.
Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?
A: Stay small. I had a tournament where I had 120 players.....never again; to many for me. I'm keeping them all 32 and under from now on.
Q:What is your opinion on organizer neutrality? Should organizers be allowed to place themselves against their own clanmates in tournaments? Should organizers be allowed to join their own tournaments at all?
A: Sure it's alright to join your own tournaments as long as you feel comfortable doing it. I myself have taken part in 3 of the 5 I've run and I'm glad I did. I think it allows you to see the tournament from the player's perspective. I've made changes based on the insights gained through playing in my own tourneys.
Q: Do you use a "schedule" for updating your tournaments, or do you just wait until they need an update?
A: I try to get in there every 2 days. Because sometimes I just need to get away and regain my affection for CC.
Q:Should “question marks” be allowed to join tournaments?
A: On the one hand, we were all “question marks” in the beginning, but on the other hand these “question marks” haven't even played 5 games yet so who knows whether they'll be in for the long haul of a tournament. I've never had to make that choice of in or not. Until I have to I don't know how I'll decide.
Q:Do you feel it is better to give a bye to players whose opponents deadbeats the tournament, or to use a reserve?
A: If I'm w/o a reserve I'll give the player the win. As I see it it's not their fault. They joined the game and that's time lost waiting on the dead beating player.
Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?
A: Some way to have a consequence from having a player dead beat the game. It's inconsiderate and a pet peeve of mine. Had that happen in about 10+ assassin games(tournament), which is the worst type of game to get a dead beater.
Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?
A: Maybe if there were a way that the tournament organizers can get notified when the games in the tournament were complete, that would be helpful
Q: If you are thinking purely on balance of tournament games is there anything you would want changing?
A: No not really. I may later change that opinion
Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?
A: Yeah, just remember that you're doing this to have fun. During the course of making sure everyone is in their games and that everything is going to plan you can easily lose sight of the fact that you should be enjoying yourself.
Q: List your top 5 biggest tournament headache's to this point
A: Only have a few so far:
1. Making sure players get into their games in a timely manner/dead beaters
2. Telling people that they don't make it to the next round ( I always feel bad)
3. Making sure that the structure of the tournament is clear to everyone so that there are no surprises.
Q:How much time does CC take from your day?
A: Pretty much every waking hour I'm not at work and sometime when I'm at work
Q:Are you a member of any clans or usergroups?
A: I used to be in a few clans, with some great people, but I've decided to go somewhat freelance for a while. I'm in a few usergroups: Ball Busterz & The Book Club.
Q: Why did you pick the name poptartpsycho18?
A: I came up w/ the name a few years ago. I went through a phase where I had a serious Pop Tart addiction, and the name seemed appropriate. Now I like the memories and the name, so I use it for most things
Q: Do you hate it when people call you poptart instead of poptartpsycho18?
A: I've had people calling me "ptp", "pop", "poptart", and "psycho" . It's actually been fun, because I've never really had a nickname before. So I'm liking them all
Q:Your classy avatars are great, , what fueled your interest in this area?
A: I think that Lauren Bacall is one of the classiest women in the world. I grew up watching old movies and I have always adored her and Audrey Hepburn especially. Having those avatars reminds me that I'm a lady and that no matter how much I'd like to go off on someone, I have to stay classy despite my extremely filthy mouth and dirtier mind .
Q: OK, this is silly but.....you know how you get this "image" of someone in your head? Well, I had this image of you because of your avatars and THEN you added the sigs and all my carefully preconceived perceptions disappeared in a flash. What is up with the bloody headed doll? Looks like some sort of freaky mass murder scene?!
A: I always try to be honest and I want it to be known that no matter how sweet and classy that I may be in my games, chat and forum postings that I'm not a pushover. I'll fight like a madwoman in my games and it's only fair that I warn you so that you won't be surprised. I'd have to be exhausted or sick to just give up, and even then it's hard for me to do.
Q: Are there any Poptarts you don't like?
A: I only like the plain, unfrosted Pop Tarts. Blueberry, Cherry or Strawberry only.
Q: Why are you a psycho for Poptarts?
A: I'm a recovering Pop Tart addict. At one point Pop Tarts almost took over my life. I even had Pop Tart brand memorabilia littering every surface of my room. But I managed to overcome my addiction and am now living a somewhat normal life with Pop Tarts only making an occasional appearance in my cupboards and toaster.
Q:Where are you from?
A: Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York.
Q:Favourite play colour?
A: Hmmm....Play: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof or Hamlet, Color: Yellow....oh do you mean in the game? I like whatever color I win in .
Q: Who is your favorite tournament organizer (excluding yourself)?
A: Hard to pick just one! I can't. I just can't pick one. I will say though that Natewolfman is a sweetie , Sir. Ricco is very professional , and Gilligan and White Moose are fun
Q:Favourite and least favourite map?
A: Most favorite: Doodle Earth & Indochina; Least favorite: WWII Gazala and Waterloo.
Q:Favourite settings?
A: No Cards, Chained, FoW
Q:Freestyle or sequential?
A: Sequential
Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?
A: I'm working on another Ladies vs. Gents tournament, where the gals and guys will be playing each other this time around to show which side excels the most. I'm thinking that I'll take a page out of Nate's book on the best way to format it. But that's after I finish 3 of the 4 I'm currently running.
Q: Thank you for your time.
A: You're welcome, even though this was longer than the SATs.......
