Interview with SkywardShadow
This week we had the chance to talk with organizer and player, SkywardShadow. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with poptartpsycho18. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our series will continue with an interview with Ryall55. I have already started a thread for this interview, so if you have any questions you can post them by clicking here.

Now, on with the interview.

Q: Hello, SkywardShadow.

A: Greetings!

Q:How did you find this website?

A: I was on another dice-game website, and saw two people recommending this one.

Q: Why did you join CC?

A: CC feeds my gaming addiction through the day, with a minimal time commitment.

Q:Why did you start to play tournaments?

A: My friend NateWolfman started running them. I branched into others from there.

Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: Amazzony's and Nate's tournaments inspired me to try and tackle one of my own.

Q: How long have you been organizing tournaments?

A: Not long, just a couple of months.

Q:What tournament did you first run?

A: Dojo Yaburi, which is still ongoing.

Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?

A: I was browsing the tournament idea forum, found an abandoned idea, and put my own twist on it.

Q: Who do you look to for inspiration when organizing your tournaments?

A: Nate, Amazzony, and Optimus.

Q: Go into a nice drawn out speech about how Natewolfman is your mentor and the coolest ever…..

A: When I was a wee-lad, Nate picked me up, and molded me into a lesser version of himself. I've been striving to emulate his awesomeness ever since. He beats me. Help.

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.

A: Dojo Yaburi has been an extreme time-commitment, due to the complicated organization. I don't really remember my first tournament, other than losing very quickly!

Q: How many tournaments have you run already, and do you have a goal in mind for how many you want to run in total before you "retire"? How many are you running right now?

A: Still running the first one! I have no specific plans on how many I will run, or when I will quit.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in? Why?

A: Band or Die was a blast, as it was a team effort with a neat twist.

Q:Do you prefer to run or enter tournaments?

A: Enter.

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite?

A: I just prefer fun themes. Any format will work.

Q: Do you find it easier to choose tournament settings yourself, or to let the players customize them?

A: Choosing them myself would be much easier, but it depends on the theme on which I prefer.

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A: I do play in many tournaments right now, otherwise, I look at all of the open games on my favorite maps.

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?

A: The image of Australia awash in my color will forever stay with me.

Q:Have you ever won a tournament?

A: I did! I won the Super Speed Tournament. Yay for lucky drops and dice, eh?

Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?

A: I suppose coming in 2nd in Band or Die while we were so close to winning.

Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?

A: When the participants have a good time.

Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?

A: Those that spawn sequels, and encourage us to join all the other tournaments by the same organizer.

Q:Have you ever been disappointed in a tournament you have run? What about one you entered?

A: Hmm, one or two that I entered never launched, which is always disappointing.

Q: What makes a successful organizer?

A: Remaining upbeat about the commitment, and the obvious ability to stick it out.

Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?

A: I personally find that themes are the biggest attention-getter. It adds that extra layer to the old "roll the dice". Having a nice graphic or something similar will help it gain a bit of attention.

Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?

A: The time commitment!

Q: For you, what is the best part of being a tournament organizer?

A: Seeing my favorite theme take fruit, and seeing others enjoy it as I do.

Q: What mistakes do you see tournament organizers make the most?

A: To expect the players to do a lot of follow-up work on their games, when most of them will just join what they're sent and forget about it.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: We've all made some games with wrong settings... but I accidentally eliminated a team because one of the players didn't seem to exist anymore. It turns out that I simply copied/pasted his name wrong. :D

Q:What is your opinion on organizer neutrality? Should organizers be allowed to place themselves against their own clanmates in tournaments? Should organizers be allowed to join their own tournaments at all?

A: I would hate to come up with a fun theme, and then be unable to play. That said, I want a different team to actually win the prize.

Q: Do you use a "schedule" for updating your tournaments, or do you just wait until they need an update?

A: I tried to follow a schedule and failed. I update when time permits.

Q:Should “question marks” be allowed to join tournaments?

A: I have to say no, play a few games first, to show that you're more likely to be in it for the long-haul.

Q:Do you feel it is better to give a bye to players whose opponents deadbeats the tournament, or to use a reserve?

A: Give a bye, though it would really depend on format.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: I wish I could see the game name when I was in the game, instead of only in the "my games" section. I've forgotten the point of some of my tournament games when just quickly taking my turns.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: Add the ability to make more than one game at a time.

Add the ability to have "empty" games that won't fall out of the system for a long period of time, if no-one joins. This would allow me to have everything ready ahead of time, with minimal upkeep and update time.

Add the ability to set up PM "templates", choosable from a drop-down menu.

Take nothing away!

Q: If you are thinking purely on balance of tournament games is there anything you would want changing?

A: Maaaaybe, in tournaments only, have a different system of awarding points from one player to another. So that a cook playing a major in a 1on1 game doesn't stand to gain so much based almost purely on luck.

Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?

A: Start small and simple, unlike my own choice.

Q: List your top 5 biggest tournament headache's to this point

A: Time, updating my charts, watching some peeps bicker in the forum, fixing my own mistakes... that's all I've got.

Q:How much time does CC take from your day?

A: Non-update days, an hour. Update days, 3 hours.

Q:Are you a member of any clans or usergroups?

A: The Truculent Alliance!

Q: Why did you pick the name SkywardShadowl?

A: If you know, you know, and if you don't, you don't.

Q:Where are you from?

A: Indianapolis, IN. GenCon is next month!

Q:Favourite play colour?

A: Blue! Which reminds me! I wish we could pick "favored" colors, and join games as that color.

Q: Who is your favorite tournament organizer (excluding yourself)?

A: Nate would smite me if I chose anyone else.

Q:Favourite and least favourite map?

A: Favorite changes over time... but probably World 2.1. My least favorite is probably Doodle Earth.

Q:Favourite settings?

A: No Cards, Chained, Fog of War.

Q:Freestyle or sequential?

A: Sequential

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: I'll brainstorm a new complicated theme when Dojo Yaburi is over.

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: Thank you for honoring me with this interview.
