Interview with Kilazul
This week we had the chance to talk with organizer and player, Kilazul. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with SkywardShadow. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.

Now, on with the interview.

Q: Hello, Kilazul.

A: Hello Gozar.

Q:How did you find this website?

A: I cannot remember but I believe it was advertised on another web based game site.

Q: Why did you join CC?

A: I’ve always been a fan of strategy games like Risk and Axis and Allies. Not to mention that the premium price is a steal for an addict like me.

Q:Why did you start to play tournaments?

A: I like competition. I also wanted to support the TOs that were doing there best to make great tournaments that would add to CC.

Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: Pretty much the same reasons. I wanted to give back to the community that had taken the time to make tournaments for me, and hopefully create fun for others.

Q: How long have you been organizing tournaments?

A: 3 months ago I first posted my first tournament. The tournament start about 2 months ago.

Q:What tournament did you first run?

A: Grand Prix – Season 1

Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?

A: Natural insanity is my creative pool.

Q: Who do you look to for inspiration when organizing your tournaments?

A: All the other TOs out there. They have lots of great ideas that spur, sometimes, completely random thoughts in my head. It’s scary in there.

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.

A: I don’t remember the first one I played in. I’ve been in quite a few. For all the tournaments I’ve run I’ve been surprised at how hard it can be to fill them up. I consider getting players the hardest part of running a tournament.

Q: How many tournaments have you run already, and do you have a goal in mind for how many you want to run in total before you "retire"? How many are you running right now?

A: I have 5 running currently. Haven’t had one finish up yet but I tend to lean toward long tournaments. I plan on running them until people get bored with my ideas. I’ve got a number of other ideas in the back of my head that I’m working on the logistics of.

Q:What tournaments have you organized?

A: Grand Prix - Season 1 - Australian Grand Prix
WWII Extravaganza - Quads
Kilazul Football League - Season 1
Indian Jones Tribute Tourney
Demo Derby

Q:What is your favourite tournament you have run?

A: So far I have liked them all for different reasons.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in? Why?

A: I don’t think I could pick one. All of them that have not been abandoned have been fun. Abandoned tournaments are a bummer.

Q:Do you prefer to run or enter tournaments?

A: Being in them is easier. Running them has been more rewarding for me.

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite?

A: Anything that is not 1v1. I tend to stay away from escalating cards also. It is my opinion that more often then not if you can take out one player, you can take them all out. Without escalating cards taking another player out has huge amounts of risk. You quite often leave your self open.

Q: Do you find it easier to choose tournament settings yourself, or to let the players customize them?

A: I like to choose them myself. I have some random number generators and play test most of my tournaments before I begin.

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A: I play loads of tournaments. I’ve had as many as 30 that I’ve been in at the same time. Right now I’m in 19.

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?

A: Not that excited. I was way more excited about the game I won that made me a Major. I’ve since lost that rank, lol.

Q:Have you ever won a tournament?

A: Not yet =(

Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?

A: I’ve always lost to great players and I’ve always had fun. So none of them have really been disappointing.

Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?

A: Players, hard work and updates. If you get players who will stick with you and join your tournaments it’s easy. Mushin has had the best updates I’ve ever seen so far. I’m trying to be more like him when it comes to updates. If your updates are good, people stay interested, and you don’t have to worry about losing people.

Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?

A: I’m not sure I could pick one. I have been in lots of tournaments that have been very well executed by the TOs

Q:Have you ever been disappointed in a tournament you have run? What about one you entered?

A: Not by one I’ve run yet. But they are all still going. Been disappointed by a lot of the ones I’ve joined. The TOs abandon them without telling anyone or trying to get someone to take it over. I have tournaments I’ve offered to take over even. But the TOs just don’t respond even if they are still actively playing games.

Q: What makes a successful organizer?

A: Great players.

Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?

A: I used to just post in the forums and have links in my signature. But with the new policy that only gives you 1 month to fill a tournament I’ve started sending messages to people who have joined other tournaments of mine. I give them the option to opt out so I’m not spamming. I think players want something that’s different and just complicated enough to make it interesting.

Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?

A: I wish there was a way to automatically send out the game invites. I’ve only done it once but I sent out the wrong game numbers to a group of people. Fortunately the game hadn’t started when I noticed, but it was inconvenient.

Q: For you, what is the best part of being a tournament organizer?

A:I feel like I’m supporting the community here. I hope I actually am =)

Q: What mistakes do you see tournament organizers make the most?

A: I think people underestimate the time and energy that goes into it behind the scenes. I spend at least a half hour to an hour a night checking games and updating my tournaments. If there is a lot of activity I might spend 2 hours a night.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: Not having enough reserves. Its hard to wait for reserves and I find that most players(myself included) don’t really wanna be on the bench. Reserves are key. Lately I’ve been trying to come up with creative ways to fill vacancies without having to have a list of reserves.

Q:What is your opinion on organizer neutrality? Should organizers be allowed to place themselves against their own clanmates in tournaments? Should organizers be allowed to join their own tournaments at all?

A: I feel that organizers should be able to play in their own tournaments. I’m in all 5 of mine. Currently in last place in my Grand Prix tournament. GRRRR!!

Q: Do you use a "schedule" for updating your tournaments, or do you just wait until they need an update?

A: A little of both. I check my games almost every night so if something major happens I try and update immediately. If nothing major has happened in a few days I’ll update anyways.

Q:Should “question marks” be allowed to join tournaments?

A: Yeah definitely. I’ve been in tournaments with people who have 300+ games under their belt and then quit before it’s over. I feel as long as the player is willing to fulfill their obligation to the tournament they should be allowed to play.

Q:Do you feel it is better to give a bye to players whose opponents deadbeats the tournament, or to use a reserve?

A: I’d rather use reserves if you can. The game has a decent amount of luck associated with it. The best player could lose to the worst player. Because of that a bye is a pretty big deal. Sometimes its necessary though.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: The clam system. I’d love to see ladder matches, clan tournaments(which you currently cannot get TO privileges for), clan tags, clan ranks within a clan for authorizing ladder matches, an easy way to look at someone and see what clan they are in, and a list of clan members.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: A way to manage players, and send invite would make thing easier. Cannot think of any that I would remove from the site.

Q: If you are thinking purely on balance of tournament games is there anything you would want changing?

A: Nothing I haven’t already talked about.

Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?

A: Not really. It’s a lot of work. It’s not something I would necessarily try and encourage people to do. The right kind of people will naturally be drawn to it.

Q: List your top 5 biggest tournament headache's to this point

A: Finding players, keeping track of which players have joined games, and keeping players from quitting when the going gets tough. Hmmm. Guess I’ve only had 3 kinds of headaches so far.

Q:How much time does CC take from your day?

A: Before I started running tournaments I had about 130-140 games going at any 1 time. I’ve cut back to around 40-60 so that I have time to manage the 5 tournaments I’m running. All in all I spend about 2 hours a night on average.

Q:Are you a member of any clans or usergroups?

A: I started a clan called Soldiers of War. And decided to allow myself to be a member =)

Q:Why did you pick the name Kilazul?

A: It was a randomly generated name for my Orc Hunter when I played World of Warcraft. I liked it so now I use it where ever I go.

Q:Where are you from?

A:Upstate New York, USA

Q:Favourite play colour?

A:Red

Q:Who is your favorite tournament organizer (excluding yourself)?
A:We have so many great tournament organizers. I’d rather not pick one.

Q:Favourite and least favourite map?

A:I’m not sure why but I really don’t like the Age of maps. Any of em. My favorite is constantly changing and depends on what type of game I’m playing. For 3-4 players my current fav is Arms Race. For 5-6 I like Indochina. For 7-8 Italy

Q:Favourite settings?

A:No cards, Seq., Foggy, Chained

Q:Freestyle or sequential?

A:Sequential. Althought its fun to play speed freestyle games.

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: Got a few in my head but I haven’t worked them out yet so I don’t know if they will work. I’d rather not divulge my ideas until I can get them in the forum. Posting in the forum is like a patent. You’ve claimed the idea as your own and if someone else steals it the world knows.

Q:Would you be happier if I stopped asking questions?

A:No. I’ve enjoyed the interview. I’m very impressed with the number of questions and the range of topics.

Q: Thank you for your time.

A:Been a pleasure. Take care and good luck out there.
