Interview with flexmaster33
This week we had the chance to talk with organizer and player, flexmaster33. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with Lufsen75. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with Marfski. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.
Now, on with the interview.
Q: Hello, flexmaster33.
A: Hi Gozar...how's your Arena playoff game going? Thanks for the interview, I always look forward to reading these...nice work with the newsletter overall.
Q:How did you find this website?
A: I used to play on the MSN site, but it folded a few years back. I did occasional web searches ever since and finally got this to pop-up. Now, I'm a ConquerClub junkie.
Q: Why did you join CC?
A: I knew I would enjoy it when I first saw it, and it has only exceeded expectations. I love all the different map combos and tourneys that are offered. I'd be on here a ton more if my wife would allow it.
Q:Why did you start to play tournaments?
A: I liked the tournament format...I've always taken traditional games and made new games out of them, so it was natural to join various events.
Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?
A: Organizers kept dead-beating on me. Still, the only other tourney I've finished is one hosted by Gilligan (nice job in all of his by the way), so I decided if I wanted to see one through to the end I'd better run it myself.
Q: How long have you been organizing tournaments?
A: I've done five tourneys over the last nine months...all sports related. I tend to run season-long tourneys, so they take a few months at a time.
Q:What tournament did you first run?
A: My first and favorite tourney was the 2007 College Basketball Season. We had between 75-80 teams (players involved) and went through the college hoops season, complete with a season-ending bracket Selection Show in the chat. It was a real blast...I can't wait to expand on it for this upcoming season.
Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?
A: I'm a sports junkie (Sports Editor for a twice-weekly suburban newspaper), so most of my ideas revolve around my favorite sports. I try to be creative with boxing tourneys or replaying seasons in defunct leagues like my USFL tourney.
Q: Who do you look to for inspiration when organizing your tournaments?
A: Guys like Optimus and Gilligan. Make it fun, see it through to the finish and encourage sportsmanship. Also, they do a nice job organizing and updating results.
Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.
A: The college hoops one that I ran was a bit overwhelming as some warned me it would be. But I love college hoops, so I didn't mind. I think we played almost 1,100 games in that thing. Of course the more tourneys I run, the better I learn to stay organized.
The first I played in...I'm still playing. It was an Arena League tourney. First the organizer disappears after 5 weeks, then my playing partner vanishes a few weeks later. Needless to stay it's almost a year later and we're still going. We are in the playoffs now, so it's nearing an end. Doubles takes forever!!!
Q: How many tournaments have you run already, and do you have a goal in mind for how many you want to run in total before you "retire"?
A: Retire...who me? I'm not hanging it up anytime soon. I find it best if I run 1 or 2 at a time, so probably about 4-5 in a year. I've organized five so far.
Q:What tournaments have you organized?
A: I've organized...College Hoops 2007, USFL Football, Boxing Champions and NBA Playoffs 2008 and taken over the Arena Football League 2007.
Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in?
A: College hoops hands down...although I like a lot of things about my Boxing Champions tourney, too.
Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite?
A: I'm almost always a singles tourney guy, just because the games keep moving and most of my leagues have a lot of games. I do enjoy a doubles event once in awhile. I do insist that all of my tourneys are Sequential...that's the only thing I'm a real stickler about.
Q: Do you find it easier to choose tournament settings yourself, or to let the players customize them?
A: I might have a few guidelines, but I like to have the players pick their own for the most part. That opens things up for home-field advantage. Plus, one of the things I like about tourneys is playing new maps.
Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?
A: I'm still a freemium, so I pretty much stick with playing the games in my own tourneys. Actually, I hate this question because my wife and I have been arguing about how much time I spend on here. I would like to play a few more games, but with two small kids at home time is limited.
Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?
A: It was fun...we all like to win, but really I play more just to enjoy the game.
Q:Have you ever won a tournament?
A: NO, NO, NO, and it's driving me crazy. I set up a bunch of these tourneys and I can't even make the playoffs...not even close most times. My day will come...I'm predicting a Final Four run in College Hoops 2008
Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?
A: Being among the leaders in the Pac-10 at mid-season, then hitting a late losing streak and ending up in the NIT tourney. And I was the only member of the selection committee...that didn't even help my case
Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?
A: I think it's important to lay out all the rules from the start and stick with a pace of play...many of mine are 2 games a week. Also, keep your results/standings updated on a frequent basis and if you have the time and energy add some fun updates along the way...those things help raise chatter in your forum and keep people involved.
Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?
A: The College Hoops tourney...it was a monster, especially for a first-timer, but I was committed to finishing it. I was able to overcome a handful of deadbeat players, one loser who messed with everyone's games for a week, and I think for the most part everyone had a good time.
Q: What makes a successful organizer?
A: Just staying on top of your tournaments. It's important not to get over committed with 4 or 5 ideas if you don't have the time to give them the attention they need.
Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?
A: I think I attract a lot of the sports fans out there...I know I always look for a sports theme when searching for one to play in. I've also got quite a few players wanting to return for College Hoops. Many times, if players find an organizer they can trust they will continue playing their events.
Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?
A: The pming gets tiresome...and in my large leagues I avoid it.
Q: For you, what is the best part of being a tournament organizer?
A: I like to keep standings and make a fun experience for players. I enjoy reading the posts when players in my leagues are getting involved. And I love that playoff chase...it's a sports thing I guess.
Q: What mistakes do you see tournament organizers make the most?
A: Getting excited about an idea and jumping in before really thinking about what they need to do to pull it off. That's why there are so many abandoned tourneys, I believe. Also, some try to add too many twists and turns and it gets confusing. I love nuances in the tourneys, but make sure to explain it well.
Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?
A: Delegating can be helpful, especially in the larger tournament. I will probably have conference commissioners for the next College Hoops season, so each of us can oversee 10-12 players, instead of me being in charge of 80.
Q:What is your opinion on organizer neutrality? Should organizers be allowed to place themselves against their own clanmates in tournaments? Should organizers be allowed to join their own tournaments at all?
A: Tournaments are a free-for-all...organizers should be allowed to play whomever they choose.
Q: Do you use a "schedule" for updating your tournaments, or do you just wait until they need an update?
A: I try to stick to a schedule, picking days of the week that work best. I try to have something new at least every other day whether its posting results or creating new games.
Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?
A: Most players are great, but I'd like to see a more sportsmanlike arena...it's never fun to go against a rude, obnoxious player.
Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?
A: I think all is good...no problems.
Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?
A: Find something you have a passion for and make a tournament, but think it through carefully especially the first time out.
Q: List your top 5 biggest tournament headache's to this point
A: 1. Players who get mad and just create havoc, 2. deadbeat players/organizers; 3. reminder pms...sorry, that's all I've got.
Q:How much time does CC take from your day?
A: Today with this interview about 3 hours...just kidding. When I'm doing it right, about 20 minutes a day. Although if I'm not careful I could easily get sucked into 2-3 hours on here. I'm working on limiting my time, while still staying involved enough to have fun.
Q:Are you a member of any clans or usergroups?
A: No, but I wouldn't mind finding one. I just don't know if I'm active enough at this point to make that commitment.
Q: Why did you pick the name flexmaster33?
A: It's an old high-school nickname...without the 33.
Q:Favourite play colour?
A: Red
Q:Favourite and least favourite map?
A: Favorite: Great Lakes. Hated: Age of Magic or Age of Might
Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?
A: College Hoops 2008 and NFL 2008...although I've got to convince my wife that I can run 2 at the same time without going bonkers.
Q: Thank you for your time.
A: Thanks, it's been fun...look forward to seeing you all in tourneys...it's about all I play anymore.
