The strict requirement is that you have at least been a major before. If you are not at the moment you can still join games.
So far, the games have all been the same. I did that because I still find them interesting in that I still learn something new almost every game. At some point people will get bored with the same format all the time. People don't seem to play more than 2 or 3 of these games and then I guess they move on.
If you want to set up something similar but for a different game style I think that's a great idea -- all I would ask is that you do it in a separate thread. Someone previously had an idea to set up a thread for majors where any major could post a callout for any sort of game they wanted to set up. Sounded like a good idea to me, but I'm not sure it was ever implemented.
