Sometimes, within a clan itself, there are daring members; members who team at the last minute. Sometimes that pays off, sometimes not.
The only clan battles I've been in have all been with teams I've either never played with, or never played with on that map. The 2nd-week "ladder" game UpandRising and I played on WWII Gazala is the first time I've played that map (unless you count the triples war game on said map, which is not yet completed but may have begun first, and begun with trips team that had not played together prior to that). That same brandy-new trips team had our butts tossed to us on Operation Drug War, a map none of us had played and with a team that had never gone out together even in practice (save for the afore-mentioned still-ongoing Gazala game).
In other words, not every clan insists on cherry-picking teams to duel on cherry-picked maps. Speaking from experience in the Black Sheep Squadron, we allow our members to join and rejoin as the mood strikes, and are not afraid to risk losing on a map we do not know against another clan team that knows each other AND the map they're playing.
