Score Resets Each Round in 1v1 Auto-Tournaments

Postby Lord_Bremen on Wed Apr 02, 2014 7:10 pm

Concise description:
  • In all 1v1 auto-tournaments, make scores reset each round.

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • As it is now, you can defeat someone in a 1v1 round yet they can still advance over you. For example: Player A goes 3-2 in Round 1, while Player B goes 5-0. In round 2, Player A beats Player B 3-2. However, player B advances (7-6 total score). Aggregate scoring over rounds makes sense in games with lots of people, but not in 1v1 games.
  • Later round performance is a better indication of skill than early margins. In the example above, Player A is almost certainly the superior player, but Player B got a lucky draw in the first round.
  • This effect is particularly problematic as tournaments advance - because they are seeded by score, those with the most wins will continue to accumulate them. Thus final and semifinal round will often be meaningless - one player will already be so far ahead that his opponent simply cannot catch up.
  • See for example: http://www.conquerclub.com/player.php?mode=autotournament&tournament_id=504

I believe your claims are rather exaggerated (Player A winning over Player B 3-2 does not clearly demonstrate that Player A is "almost certainly the superior player") but on balance I agree with your suggestion because of your argument about how the late rounds can be meaningless.
