IP Check at registration

The problem. Every day I play games with ? who are clearly not new to Conquer Club. Unless they blatantly admit that they've created another account, I can't even put it in the "Cheating and Abuse" reports simply for suspicion and no real proof.

Concise description:
 • Script that checks for duplicate IP's at registration.

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
 • Limit the multi's on the site.
[*]Give Multi-Hunters a flag for players abusing the system, potentially reduce their workload
[*]Protect players from losing large points to people manipulating the system.
Potential conflict: I understand that there are some couples with the same IP, so this isn't a catch all I guess. But it would be enough to flag a player who is habitually making accounts.

I helped the owners of a game called astro empires set up a system like this. It can all be coded into the registration system.

They now have a pretty proxy-proof gaming site.

What a great idea! I can't imagine how helpful this would be to the site. With all the volunteers here, I'm sure someone would be willing to receive a conquer club t-shirt and premium for life to set this up. But, then, what would the multi-hunters do? Hoepfully we could find something new for hte multi-hutners to do and we aren't getting mired in tieing down volunteers to manual IP checks.

From a technical standpoint; IP's can easily be masked, or duplicated. If someone really wants to get by this filter, or most any filter for that reason, they can. I'm sure something that matches IP's already exists to make the Hunter's jobs easier, but a filter like this would only block the innocent or the technically ignorant, and not the real culprits here.

Your average Joe does not know how to mask IP's. Yes, there are plenty that can. But it would prevent, I believe, quite a few multi's...even if it just created a watch list for them playing games together...idk.

Nah. Why implement something if it doesn't catch every single multi? Waste of time.

"average Joe" is not the one creating multi's is he?

More than likely, an average Joe is probably the one creating multis. Of course, Joe the Plumber's multis are probably not as dangerous to the site as the "serious" multis, but his are most likely the most numerous.

Whos to say that there isnt some guy that I know that loves to get on with a multi only to mess with you "hunters"

Ill post on this thread one more time, then Im el fin ... CC does not actively seek and block what is called an "elite" proxy. This can be fixed with coding.

Do some web research. try getting on other games like cybernations or astroempires (the two biggest most popular browser games out) and see if you can proxy... well you can but its very very very very hard on one and impossible on the other... because on one I helped them 4 years ago and the other I tried just to see If I could.

All this being said.. there are simple ways that I am not going to mention here because I dont want ppl cheating, that are easy and you (or no gaming site) would never be able to stop (unless you have a pattern hit recognizer (something that AE just added last year too :S )) ... but things could be better.

LordVoldemort,

I'm confused...are you saying that this exists? Because that does not seem to be what you are saying, and why would it be a secret?

FYI, I'll stop making suggestions on the site, I believe I've received the answer which is just to ignore the post. Disappointed that a logical discussion cannot be had, and that with a member who is willing to help make it happen, the only notice or response of a mod is to say "maybe this already exists."

Anyway, I hear you loud and clear CC.

Well, should the Multi Hunters reveal all their secrets to the multi's?

I believe this is what LV was getting at. If some or all of their secrets are given out then the cheaters will know what they need to work around. There are still cheaters on here. Let's hope the hunters have all the tools they need!

I understand where your coming from, but maybe there is merit to some of the other arguments here too. I feel like LV has the right and probably should hide the tactics that the hunters use. Otherwise it would probably be very easy to circumvent them. No one is ignoring your post, and in fact the opposite. I mean how often do you see multi hunters in Suggs anyways. XD At the same time, I don't feel like I can fast track this over any other suggestion. Every suggestion has merit and if I start prioritizing, then I will just have more people asking to put theirs through next, or fast track it. It would really end up with the Submitted Suggestions section looking like what this one is right now. That would make it useless for lack as the To-Do we used to have. We just started cleaning up this forum with the help from a bunch of volunteers. Soon this forum will be neat and tidy. Don't worry, your suggestion won't be forgotten, but you have to realize that these things can and do take time.

Definitely understand and appreciate the work you guys put in. It was frustrating to have the original post sit for 3 weeks without a mod response.

Understandable. We've long had a number of methods for identifying multis---some of which are currently being updated behind-the-scenes. :D

IP address check on joining CC

On signing up to a new account, an IP check is carried out automatically to check if it is a multiple account

Looking at the amount of multi's on the site, it seems obvious that the ideal way to deal with this would be to check them out before they are allowed to play a game.

Maybe if someone signs up a new account they are told they have to come back in say 24/48i hours before they can start or join games. CC will know automatically who signs up each day, the multi hunter runs a check and the new player either gets an automated email to say they can now start/join games or that they are using a multiple account and they are busted with that account and their other accounts.

I am sure that there are some multi accounts which have gone on for sometime and this maybe would act as a deterrant.

It is also sensible when there are issues with any process that the checks are done at the point of inception.

What about the kids who play from school, coworkers or family members? Are you saying only 1 account per IP address? If so I am a multi because my wife and I use the same computer.

Are there any other sites that force you to wait 24 hours before even being able to use the site?? Your suggestion will drive more people away from the site than the number of multis it would potentially catch.

Well at least it would start some dialogue with that new user to find out the facts at the earliest possible stage and if there were any C & A reports this could be dealt with much more quickly and appear to give a better customer service
