This depends entirely on the script. I'll try my best to explain though I'm a mobile guy more than a web guy.
Greasemonkey scripts are pretty much like the code on any site (javascript) with some key modifications. These allow you to store data over time such as your BOB settings etc. Normal web browsers don't usually allow this and it's part of the reason you can't use greasemonkey in all browsers. These extra bits are what make adding greasemonkey scripts to the site take so long as they would have to be redeveloped for the site.
There is also a consideration for maintenance. As the OP pointed out, the script itself has fallen out of development. If it becomes a part of the site that means it needs to be maintained or the site as a whole will suffer. The issue here is that every new feature requires more time to maintain. So every hour spent integrating and maintaining Map Ranks would mean less time on other things.
Hope that makes the issues a little clearer. I can't speak about the website direction on this as, again, I'm just the app guy.
