The Story
There are many references to this story....among which is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Trafalgar

1. Map developer: Cairnswk

2. The number of bonus continents

6 national continents are outlined below - neutrals do not have continents.
Each flagship is also its own continent.

3. The number of territories currently on the map.

95...the number of territories are:

Weather Line
British 14 - includes two territories on Victory
French 10 - includes two territories on Bucentaure
Spanish 7 - includes two territories on Santissima Trinidad
Weather Neutrals 7
Total 38
-------------------
Lee Line
British 16 - includes two territories on Victory
French 10 - includes two territories on Algesiras
Spanish 10 - includes two territories on Principe De Asturias
Lee Neutrals 21
Total 57

Grand Total 95.

Neutral Starts:
Weather Line Intermediary Vessels - 7 (each 1)
Victory Bow and Stern (each 3)
Bucentaure Bow and Stern (each 3)
Santissima Trinidad Bow and Stern (each 3)

and neutral 2s on Bellerophon, Orion, San Augustin as the balancing vessel
--------------------------------
Lee Line Intermediary Vessels - 21 (each 1)
Royal Sovereign Bow and Stern (each 3)
Algesiras Bow and Stern (each 3)
Principe De Asturias (each 3)

3. Descriptions of any unique features or areas.
* featured is the rear of the Victory in the left legend ghosted;
* bottom right corner is the Santissima Trinidad
Cannon play an important part in this battle.

***************************************************************************************

This is preview plan of the map below.
I think the layout of this one would allow for great gameplay as there are several continents, and this format is after the British have intercepted the French at right-angles at two points to split the French forces in two.

Let me know what you think.

looks good, but the fact that all both the British and the French brought a ship called the Neptune, and the Spanish brought the Neptuno, which could be confusing, you may have to think about this, but it shouldn't pop up for a fair while yet.

I will draw up a version of it for you if you want

Yes there are three Neptunes blue sam3, thanks for commenting. :)
But they will be listed under their separate countries on opposite sides of the map. :)
and will be noted as B# - F# - S#....# = number but not sure what number yet as i haven't finished the layout and numbering yet.
please draw up a version if you like; can't help. the more info the better. :)

Sheesh, 'bout time cairns!

I suppose one question immediately worth asking: do you want to include every ship there, or perhaps focus on the heart of the engagement? Here's where I'd normally write a historically-incisive follow-up, but I'm a bit rusty on the tactical blow-by-blow of the battle and would need to brush up a bit (I read John Keegan's Price of Admiralty some years ago, terrific book).

Certainly some sort of distinction will need to be made between bombarding ships and ships that are close enough to board the enemy. And perhaps a small neutral bonus for Nelson and the French bloke (Villaneuve? something like that, too lazy to wiki right now).

Well sometimes with creative people there is a right time and a wrong time. this is now the right time to research and display for this project.

Of course, of course. and thanks for dropping by.
I have a couple of good reference books here - 50 decisive battles that changed history & Battle - a history of conflict on land sea and air which between them have about every major battle from throughout the ages.

I thought the layout of this map would be quite good with nearly every ship in the battle - some approaching the battle stage who wouldn't be able to fire - and others already involved who would be able to bombard. And those able to bombard would be noted so.

Yes, since this part of the Napoleonic Wars, and partnering with Waterloo, it would be appropriate for holding the leaders as i did in Waterloo. But i doubt if this map will be as complicated as Waterloo. :)

Another thing to consider is the type of boat involved...

Generally - there were "Ships of the Line" - which had (on average) 74 cannons on board... and generally lined up next to each other and pummelled the living crap out of each other...

Then there were the smaller more nimbler ships like Frigates that had fewer guns and were weaker - but were useful for scouting and stuff.

And you probably don't want to go into this level - but onboard the ships were different types of troops too - such as Marines and Gunners etc...

And further more - most of the cannons were down the sides of the ships - and only a few longer range cannons faced forwards - but I don't think it's going to be possible to model that either...

Whichever direction you go in Cairns - I'm looking forward to this - and I hope it's as Epic as Waterloo... my only concern is that we no longer have Benjikat with us to help us with his comments!

Good luck.

Yes, C...it would be hard to get down to that level, but with some appropriate annotations about the cannon firing forward as well as sideways, i think that would be interesting to install.
i think i should be able to deploy about 60 ships on this map, some with varying capacities.

Watch this space. :)

glad you've got this in your head again cairns ... look forward to your first mock up ... and yeah, the image above (which i had to f5 for) seems like an interesting template ... unless your still deciding on a couple of possibilities ?

You could have an inset between two battleships that can show a close up of the people fighting close up...This map sounds like it will be one of your best good luck. Ill try to make more use comments once you get started

OK
Here is a draft of the Spanish Fleet models

Image

As you can see, flagship will be fully sailed plus the flag at rear

Ships of the line will be without the rear flag

Differentiation needs to be shown between those that can fire forward and sideways, and sideways only as previously stated.

Frigates are yet to be finalised....suggestions.

Army shadows are planned as follows:
All with 75% transparency
Spanish: White with Yellow outline
French: White with Blue outline
British: White with red outline

I think that if the ships were from the side view, the map would look a lot better even though it is inaccurate to have a side view of a ship from the top. right now it is hard to tell they are ships.

P.S. Do we need to name every ship?

Well yes most ships don't look like ships that we see from the side when they are shown from the top.

As to every ship being named...well the rest of the foundry will determine that i guess amd i think you might have your own battle there. I could be wrong. :)
And what would you suggest otherwise. It's all good and well to state something but having no alternative to what you want doesn't tell me anything.

I dont post much in here (that might be an understatement), but I spend a lot of time looking, and I think with this type of map attention to detail is paramount, otherwise it will be just a sea battle. You may aswell say 'do we have to name every state on USA'. The answer is yes, you do.

Keep up the good work cairns.

I will go back to just looking now.

Your legend list is missing B26. ;)

Yes, definitely the top-down view. I can't imagine doing it any other way.

Also, am I supposed to be able to tell the differences between ship types (frigate, etc.) from the current draft? 'Cause maybe my eyes have gone south, but I can't. Or maybe I'm not looking for the right thing, tho I do detect a few of those flagship backstay banners.

the second draft is considerably better. this was my first time going through the thread, and i was going to suggest that it was hard to tell which ship belonged to whom, but now its much clearer.

i currently don't understand attack routes, and theres no bonus structure in place, but i'm sure you'll get that done soon
