I prefer Texas' old lighter colour. In fact, I think I prefer all the old colours of that map.

New England freeway bonus. +6

you already get the Rhode Island bonus of 1. You have 4 capitals so you're killing other's chances of getting that bonus as well as being close to getting it yourself. You can hold it with 5 border territories but most likely will do it with 7.

The other freeway bonus doesn't have nearly as many benefits. It goes in the middle of a bunch of stuff rather than around/on the edges.

+6 is really +7 with the Rhode Island. Seems fair to me since it's 10 territories.

I think this map is named after the region called New England on the USA map but I agree with this. We have West, Southwest, Southeast. Let's not further a mistake (calling something 'New England' when it includes territories called Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey on both the USA map and this one) by keeping a name purely because of how it appears on a different map.

A new England map would go into detail and provide New England Flair. New England may be small but there are multiple regions to each of the states. The Berkshires are completely different than the Boston Area, The South Shore Islands and cape would also be different. My Idea for a new England map would not only incorporate the states as regions but split up the states. If you publish a New England map like that it will ruin it for New England maps that are better.

Just to let you know, the name will stay.

At the very beginning of this project I set the goals and purpose.
These 6 maps will be maps based on the bonus regions of the USA map we currently have. Therefore, they will be named after them as well.

The Great Lakes map is not really a great Lakes map. There are many states that would NOT be associated with the Great Lakes in there. But the name stays because it is the bonus region name on the USA map. The Rockies map is another example. Many of the states there are PLAINS states. But, since there is not a PLAINS bonus region in the USA map, the names stays.

Now I am not trying to be difficult for the sake of it. I am actually not trying to be difficult at all. I am sticking to my goals that I set at the beginning. If this was a problem then, why did someone not say anything?

BTW I am the carto that did the other Great lakes map on this site. I do not feel that the new one I do, will take anything away from the old one. They have two different purposes and two different audiences. Just as a different New England map (if someone wishes to create it in the future) would have a different purpose/GP/audience.

I just saw this thread. This is awesome! I can't wait for it to come out! I may have to try out these tournament things if it does. I agree that the naming of the regions is a little off, but so what.

So any talk on the state colors? If everything is set then we can go to the icon topic.

to add further to the colour talk on that map, these are too bright and fluorescent. the other ones were a bit more dull and more fitting for the different areas.

The problem was that they were too dull and similar. The Southwest and Southeast colors were too close. These are brighter but I feel they help set apart the states better.

We just need to see what others think.

I will fix the bonus for the interstate in NE as well.

Well by that logic, there should only be 4 continents on that map--one of them being New England :P I think North East is a better name, and that if you arent going to be completely accurate to the USA map, you might as well just change the name.

Not really. I said the maps were based on the bonus regions of the USA map. I never said that they were based on the same number of states. I added more of the states to the Great lakes region as well.

There are several reasons i did not keep only the 4 states from New England and the 12 from Great Lakes
-I wanted to use the entire Lower 48 states
-I already had a 4 state group (west) and did not want another. Especially since the New England map would have been very inaccurate only having 4 states.

So once again, The Maps are BASED on the bonus groups from the USA map NOT the 100% the states in those groups. The names of the groups from the USA map are going to be the names for my 6 pack. Any states that I have added to any region were states that actually exist in that region and were too small to be fit properly on the current USA map.

Yeah - USA has 42 countries (cos it's almost a copy of classic) whereas there are more actual states than that?

Correct. The USA maps I will be making are based off of the grouped bonus regions in the current USA map. Those regions represent the lower 48 contiguous states of the USA.

If you wanted to get rid of the 4 state West map, you could add Alaska and Hawaii to it. Just add some sea/plane routes. I think it's doable, would represent all 50 states (since you already added 6) and would still play nicely (if not better) by opening up that map a bit more.

Hawaii fits the warm feel - not sure that Alaska would though - wouldn't that better fit the north west map?

I understand why you are asking and here is my explanation.
Before I even started making the maps I thought about this "issue".

Here are the reasons why I am not putting Alaska and Hawaii in the Wet map or any map fro the 6 pack.
    1) Those states are not in the USA map. That is the BIGGEST reason. The west bonus region does not have them. I want to stick to the regions in the USA map.
    2) By adding the other two states, I would need to have plane or boat routes. Those just don't fit the map. Plus those two other states don't really have anything to do with the west region as it is.
    3) I added the missing states int eh New England and Great lakes map because they were technically already there. Just because they were not visible in the USA map, does not mean their land mass was not shown. It was a simple issue of scale and size. There would be no way to have army circles. If I had made the New England Map with only 4 states, people would have been mad about that.

So there it is. I will not add the states Alaska or Hawaii to the West map for the reasons stated above. But thanks for the input and suggestion.

The map Pack will:
    1) Have 6 maps
    2) Each map will be "based" off of a bonus region from the USA map.
    3) The title of each map will be the same as the Bonus regions of the USA map.
    4) If any states are not represented int eh USA map by a specific territory but they are assumed to be there based off of the USA graphic, I will include them in the map.
    5) For each of the Map pack maps, the bonus regions will be individual states (with the exception of D.C.) and the territories will be cities in those states.

So with the lull in comments, can I assume the STATE colors are ok?

If so, we can move to the icon talks now.
When requesting an icon change (type NOT color) please answer the following:
    1) State
    2) Icon (If you have an image please post it or link to it.)
    3) Can icon be represented in very small shape\
    4) Why should it be used (i.e significance)

And like I said before, I don't want to go changing icons for the sake of it.
Before I make any changes I will give the community time to discuss and determine icon changes.
Then I will make updates.

Thanks

Nebraska and Montana are pretty hard to distinguish.

After that...

North Dakota <-> Wyoming because you can't see the icons in the legend.

And then...

Missipie and North Carolina... but I think you'd only catch this at a quick glance anything more and you'd be OK.

maybe you could have thesse 6 maps separate, but then have 1 mega massive map with all combined. that would be terrific for really big games and it would be kind of different

Yes. Once the icons are set, we will move to background images and color tweaking. Then once I get GP badges and GFX badges, I will make the Large images and XML.

Here are some remarks. Maybe you should also read back in the thread to find all the discussion that we already had.

West
    remove the tilt
the grape leaf is a bit weird
South-West
remove the tilt for Arizona cactus
move all in order to have at least one fully visible icon
Rockies
dark and medium blue icons are not enough contrasted
move South Dakota icon to have at least one fully visible icon
what is the Kansas icon supposed to represent
South-East
move all in order to have at least one fully visible icon
South Carolina sailing-boat is a bit sketchy
Great Lakes
    Indiana icon is illegible
again more in general move all in order to have at least one fully visible icon
New England
New York contrast is not enough
and I'm not sure about the mass production of liberty statue

I would still recommend for Missouri's icon to change to the Arch. The cow just does not fit well with the actual nature of our state. If that doesn't work, I'll try to find something else, but it will probably be a few more days. I'll also try to look at some of the other icons.
