If you are serious about having a Lappland bonus like Gillipig described, why not distinguish those territories with a different texture? A while back you had one with little crescents which made me think of reindeer hoofprints, and when I think of the Sami, I think of their herds. Fitting in the explanation might be tough, but how about this? Expand the boxes around Svalbard and Foroyar and put the explanation of each island bonus inside, to the right of each island. Now you have freed the northeast corner of the map. Put the texture on all the appropriate territories and on a portion of the non-playable (Russian) territory, and put the necessary text on the latter. VoilĆ”!.
The Wikipedia page for SƔpmi marks the area I am thinking of. In fact, SƔpmi might be a more correct name for the bonus, but I'm not well versed in these matters.

Hmm... yes, the hoofprint texture could be appropriate for such use. :)

For Faroe this might work, but I don't think I can extend the Svalbard frame enough... now that it has 2 different bonus values. In fact I don't think the text will even fit there properly.

Furthermore, there's already a lot of text on the map, I don't think I really want to add any more... need to keep it simple. Also scattering the island bonus text around the map might not be that good in terms of clarity... It might be better to have it in one place, so that people can find it easily when they need to.

Maybe I'll just make a map of the Lapland war in the future ;)

Well, you might move Svalbard south and then use an irregular frame to get enough room, but you're probably right about the general loss of clarity.

I took a quick look at that link. Yet another piece of the big picture that doesn't get much press here in North America. Could be an interesting map to add to the collection of WWII maps here at CC. (If enough get made, a very interesting tournament, on the scale of the current Global Takeover I, could be made just from WWII maps.)

Yeah, I'm not sold on that solution. It would make the map real cluttered. Also I'm not even sure if it could be made legible in the small version. Moving on...

Indeed. The lapland war would have all the elements to make an interesting CC map. Quite interesting.

Main events of WWII in Finland: russia attacks finland, finland fights back, finland asks nazis for help, nazis come to lapland and help finland kick soviet ass, finland says "enough of these nazi scum, no need for them anymore, let's kick them out of lapland".... ;)

On another note: could we get a mod inspection here soonish? The gameplay is starting to be in a good shape, so I'd like to know if the mods have anything in mind, like a list of things I need to do to get the map to graphics shop, or similar.

A small update in the gameplay, which hits 2 birds with one update.. It makes the borders more realistic and improves gameplay balance.

North finland and central finland were swithced around in border count and bonus value: North finland is now 4 borders and +4, central is 3 and +3. This makes the All Finland superbonus to have 4 borders to defend. It will thus be more balanced against Norway and Sweden:

All Norway + Svalbard = 6 borders, +12 bonus
All Finland = 4 borders, +12 bonus
All Sweden = 8 borders, +17 bonus
Denmark, Iceland, Faroe = 2 borders, +7 bonus

So Norway still has 2 borders more than Finland, but Norway has the advantage of possibility to expand to Iceland with no border gain, which balances this out. All Norway, Svalbard, Iceland = 6 borders, +15 bonus.

Anyway here's version 34b.

Yes it looks better that way, it's clearer so it's easier to see what the map is called!

I really like the new title: it suggests blue sky above snowfields, perfect for the theme. The new texture? Not so much.

Perhaps it's because when I look out the window I see a blue sky above huge piles of snow...

well I modified the texture. is this any better?

May I suggest a 3 colored title; white, green then blue. Snow, Forrest, Sky :D .

I actually tried it at first, didn't look good, not enough space there for multiple colours... looks messy. So I went with 2 colours only.

I dont like the current texture. It stands out too much. Maybe reduce the opacity?

Have you tried two completely different colors, red and yellow!?
By the way I think the shield around the capitals should have a different colour than the rest of the territs, to stand out a bit!

I'll tweak it for the next update.

Gillipig wrote:Have you tried two completely different colors, red and yellow!?

No, but why would I? How would it fit the theme and/or visual style of the map?

Anyway, I'm still waiting for that mod visit. I need a mod to inspect the gameplay and let me know what more I need to do with the gameplay to get the map moved to graphics shop. I hate how the map is in a kind of a limbo at the moment, where I'm stuck doing small graphical tweaks even though the map isn't even in the graphics shop yet.

I was just thinking that maybe a red colored shield around the capitals could somehow be matched with a reddish title.

Why would I want to put red shields on the capitals? It'd be hard to see army numbers on them.

I mean it seriously though, if there is a good reason why I should consider red shields around capitals, please let me know.

Things like that are hard to reason about! I think it might look good but it's your map and if you don't like how it looks then don't use it! Remember that to get a good idea you often have to try a hundred bad ones :D !

Hey, you don't have to tell me... if you want to take a look at some of the early versions of this map, they were completely different than what we have now.... We had Estonia in the map, and cities instead of territories... The map has evolved a lot from those days.

As for any red colours, I don't think it would work that good. The colour scale of the map is more on the cold side, and adding any warm colours such as red and yellow would just clash with the rest of the map too much.

I preferred the texture on version 34b. It looked like snowdrifts. Your new texture looks like it has been stamped into the snow, but I don't know what was doing the stamping, so it looks odd.

Hm. You have a point there. Oh well, the search for perfect texture continues...

I could try "inverting" the current texture so that the contours go "out" of the map instead of "in" to the map as they do now, if that makes any sense...
