How many armies do you need to take out another player?

When I'm deciding whether I have enough armies to take out someone else, I add up all of the player's armies and add 1 for each territory I need to conquer.
Say the enemy has six territories, with 8, 3, 3, 2, 1, 1. I'd make sure I have at least 24 armies in this case.
Is my estimation too low? Is there a better gauge for armies needed to eliminate another player?

Well, I always try to have AT LEAST 5-10 more than the number of troops that I'll have to kill with that 1 stack, which means if I'm splitting up to attack, I'll have even more. If there are quite a few 1's also, I'll add a few more troops for that.

4 X as many with these "random" dice is a good idea.

I like this theory, but it sounds vaguely familiar... I've found that if you have average dice it will work 75% of the time or better. If you can't get those numbers, cash and spread, and hope for a hanging. I've made quite a few sweeps lately on the turn AFTER I cashed because the targets didn't line up just right.

I think for a minimum you need 1.5 superiority plus 1 for each territory, when dealing with relatively small stacks. This works about 75-80% of the time. Large stacks are different and sometimes less than 1.5 superiority works.
You can get dice analyzer and look at each play if you are interested in real odds calculations.

Much appreciated, guys. I think I'll use the formula for larger stacks, and 1.5 fir smaller ones.

I find that there is absolutely no way to tell whether or not you have enough. I've had games where I took out all 10 of an enemy with 6 of my own, with 2 casualties, and other games where 12 wasn't enough for 2 enemies.
Basically, I just get at least twice as many units as my target has and hope for the best.

Download assault odds calculator. This 1.5x rule is incorrect. Truth is that you only need 87 troops to take out 100 half of the time.
Here's a summary:
20 v 8, 3, 3, 2, 1, 1 = 48% chance of success.
21 = 55%
22 = 62%
23 = 68%
24 = 74%
25 = 79%
26 = 83%
27 = 86%
28 = 89%
29 = 92%
30 = 94%

I use this method but add
at least 5 or 6 armies on top of it. Sometimes it is more than enough, other times no.
Yesterday I had 14 armies on 2 terr to take out 6 (which would have given me the game) and the dice failed. Guess I forgot to touch the dice with my lucky wand.

When I go for a kill I try to have twice the amount of armies of my opponent. Sometimes you can get really unlucky... and sometimes you can get lucky. But I usually don't risk it with less troops, unless it's kill or get killed...

What kinda game is this? Escalating,flat rate or no cards? Makes a difference..

in an 8 player esc game I might go for a kill with only 30 % success. (if i will be able to win the game after the kill). Only if i think my chances will raise if I don't go for it i won't take the risk. like always it depends on the situation.
