No, it's not to be expected and the context is that this is a public forum. The vocabulary of hate speech is generally only humorous and acceptable to insensitive bigots.

As a common expression this slang term has no positive associations and though his intent is only to make you the butt of a "joke," it's pejorative connotations remain. There are better ways to jokingly tease your "buds" on a public forum than calling them homosexual as a negative slam. If that particular derogatory slang is the vernacular of your friends, then maybe it's time to examine the meaning of the word, consider why you use it and determine if you possess the intelligence to express yourself in a better way.
"We joke like this all the time" simply shows how easy it is to slip into a habit of using slang without considering the meaning of the word or who it affects.
