Why are small maps neccesary?

Postby captainwalrus on Fri Jul 03, 2009 7:36 pm

It seems like there are some maps are very hard to make small maps for. For example, WWII Europe. I am trying to work on a france map that is a lot bigger and more accurate than the one we have right now, it will be a France 2.0, but I don't see it working with a small map.
Can some maps just only have a large verion?

Small maps are needed because some people do not have large screens. For example, I have two computers. One I would be fine with a giant 1500x1500 map, no problems at all (lol I have a very nice large screen for it xD) but the other is a very small screen, and for internet even the small cup is a bit large

I'm not saying the size requirement should be higher but why do we need a like 840x800 and then also a smaller one that is at least 25% smaller.

9. A map must work within the following map size restrictions:

    1. SMALL MAP: WIDTH up to 630 px; HEIGHT 600 px
    2. LARGE MAP: WIDTH up to 840 px ; HEIGHT 800 px.
    3. SIZE DIFFERENTIAL: A large map must be noticably larger than their small map; 9% larger is required but 33.3% (1/3rd) is recommended.
    4. NOTE: Mapmakers are encouraged to make their large maps smaller than the maximum size limits when possible to eliminate scrolling to attack/read the sidebar info.

You have to develope both large and small versions.
For example i use only small version of maps to play :). With the large version i have to scroll the page all time.
But it is strange that you can not resize your map of 9% at the least. :?

I thought it was much more than 9% I thought the minimum was 25%.

The 9% is really the exception, not the rule. The guidelines only give upper bounds for size limits because that is usually the boundary people have a problem with. Therefore if someone doesn't want to maximize the size of their map they could just try to make the large map the same dimensions as the small map. CC didn't want this, and hence the 9% mandatory increase was put in place.

On the other hand, if you are trying to maximize the size of your map, you might pick the maximum dimensions for the large and the small maps. In that case, the difference in size is ~25% on each linear dimension and ~44% difference in area

I've always felt the size restrictions on small maps made cartography exceptionally hard, especially for complicated ideas. For a while there was talk about hiding the menu bar on the left side and consolidating the action buttons to the right side. This would allow MUCH bigger maps, for both small in large. But it never happened and likely never will :?

Yes, everything gets done in BOB quite quickly! Think of the time delay between the card count on the site versus Tr0y's original script.

Wow, Thanks for telling that BOB could hid the game menu.
Now I dont have to play with full screen or hide my taskbat when viewing large maps.
I have a laptop with 1280x800 resolution and like to see large maps.
Cant BOB be bundled with regular CC or is it Grease Monkey and thus only for Firefox?
