Interested in Making Maps

Postby Len44 on Sun Mar 22, 2009 6:17 pm

I am interested in making maps, but I don't know any tips/guidlines to work off of. Could anyone fill me in on the basics of mapmaking?

I use photoshop and a 3D modeling program, and am fairly good at both.

start there, there's also lots of tutorials about. That's great that your interested. 3D modeling programs sound great! Do you have an idea of what you want to do yet?

edit: Theres also a "tips & tricks" thread, but you may not need a lot of that if your already comfortable with photoshop.

for me, when first starting to make maps, it helped me to get a map of the area (if you are doing a real place) off Google, then drag it into photoshop and trace the outline (for good quality borders, i use 2px brush).
After that, it helps me to go on to Wikipedia or another site that has the names of cities or towns from the area, and base the territories off of that.

hope that helps

Ok, I'll check that topic out.

I was kind of thinking of making a fantasy land, but a real place would be cooler, and easier. Yeah, I'm going to try to blend the 3D land with photoshop or something. I was expirementing in photoshop the other day and it wasn't turning out that great.

Thanks for the tips, tlane. Another thing, how do you fill in the inside of borders without making a double-streaked line around the border?
