Map ideas reconstruction and other nonsense.

Postby gimil on Sat Jul 19, 2008 9:45 am

Hello fellow Foundristas,

It has been brought to our attention that the Map Ideas subforum has been getting increasingly difficult to navigate. In light of these concerns andy, owktown and I have spent this afternoon/morning restructuring and have split the old Ideas subforum into three subforums:

I. The Drafting Room: New Projects subforum is now where new maps will get their start. Advanced Drafts will be stickied and ultimately stamped and sent on to the Main Foundry.(clicky)

II. The Map Ideas/Suggestions subforum will replace the current New Map Ideas topic. This is the place to discuss ideas that do not yet have a draft, or if you have an idea but need the help of a cartographer. It should now be easier to find and follow ideas than in the old uber-thread.(clicky)

III. Scrap Heap: Dead Projects will be a subforum within the Drafting Room where we'll put any map that has been put on vacation or been abandoned by the mapmaker. Inside The Scrap Heap you can find guidelines for when/why we put maps there and how to get your map back out.(clicky)

We hope that these changes will make the Foundry more user-friendly, both for Foundry veterans and new comers alike. As always, thanks to all of you for your recent feedback and suggestions.

Now lets get back to doing what we do best, making maps!

Enjoy.
gimil & and cartoes.

Cool Ideas, but the sub-forums within sub-forums kinda make the Foundry seem like a maze! :?

So we (non-cartos) should never actually post in the Scrap Heap, right?

To that I say "awesome!"

Its a bit more complicated now, but it looks like it will make everything easier in the long run, especially for new mapmakers.
I'm glad that Ideas has been split. Makes it easier to find what I want now.

But now it makes me want the Main Foundry to be a subforum even more

Cause the list is now : early maps, early maps, jump to forge, discussion
I think it'd be easier to understand if the main foundry was part of that list, with discussion taking the place where the foundry is now, but you guys didn't seem to like that idea.

We discussed that, and the only sub-forum within a sub-forum is the Scrap Heap, which is going to get the least attention anyway.

And you're free to post in Scrap Heap topics - the nice thing about giving dead threads their own sub-forum is that you can necrobump away and it won't interfere with current projects. You just can't post new topics (and why would you?).

Could the titles be changed to "Map Suggestions" and "Drafting Room" ?

That would make more sense to me. Map suggestions because it IS a place so suggest stuff.
Drafting Room, because the description of that forum says its for new maps. no need to write "new projects" in the title.

just my 2c

Could the maps that are locked in the scrap heap be unlocked? Since they're in the scrap heap now, it shouldn't matter much if someone posts in them.

I treid to explain Sub Forums:

Free to good home:

Where map makers drop a map and let other players countiue on it. (ive seen a few of those and im volunteered to do one of them)

We start as soon as i got time:

The maps which we dont want to Be scrapheaped but we cant conitue on them yet.

Free to a good home: start an idea thread, or [Abandon] your map
Will start is as soon as I'm finnished with one of my other maps: [Vacation]

Things can be pulled out of the Scrap Heap - all you have to do is ask. :)

What about seperate sub-forums for everything. One for ideas, one for graphics, gameplay etc.

We wanted to keep the bulk of the work happening in the Main Foundry - if you hide the graphics and gameplay work in a sub-forum you lose exposure.

It took us a while and much discussion to come up with this system... let's give it some time and see how it works.

I like it. It makes it easier for my commenting. Before, I had to check through dozens of threads in one forum, and only comment on a few because the rest would not have an actual draft. Now I know which ones to comment on

the ideas subforum depresses the hell out of me.

i think if you go through, theres like 15 dead "human body" projects as well as another like 10 for periodic tables (although tactix i think , finally got one out right?)

I finally got one into the Foundry yes, but it's been on quite a vacation as I've focused on getting The Citadel quenched and keeping the Newsletter running smoothly. Expect an update almost immediately after The Citadel quenches.

On topic, I like the reorganization. It will keep all of us from having to write those stupid "DID YOU EVEN LOOK AT THE LAST POSTING DATE?!" posts.
