So tell me what do you dislike about the foundry? Why? What should be done to make it better?

I know its not really possible to fix, but i would like there to be less active maps being created. I know that sort of goes against everything, but with so many maps, its hard to keep track of the ones you like. Plus, instead of putting a lot of comments on a few active maps, whenever i am in here i have to look at most of the threads just to figure out what they are about, cause with so many its hard to remember.

Also, with so many maps, the comments are spread over all of them, so that gives less posts per map.

This used to get to me as well, but since the new CA's where brought in coleman has increased the bar for leaving map ideas, there is now less active maps in the foudrey. Were gonig for quality not quantity :)

But I feel there there is still room for improvment.

one-line vague comments

lack of suggestions when saying something doesn't work

not reading posts in the thread to see what discussion has taken place. To the people that say, "Oh the threads are too long to read and too much to go through," well most people don't even read a page or two. You can't read the first couple pages of a thread or the last couple? C'mon that's just laziness.

That brings me to another point. Many people just want to talk not actually participate in a discussion. They make a one-line post and come back two weeks later and ask again in only a few words why their suggestion was not heeded. The foundry suddenly becomes a place that doesn't listen.

'I think this should be made' posts for maps in Final Forge.

I don't think much of this can be solved.

How can you change the 'forum' mentality when the foundry isn't like a regular forum? Getting people to read instead of just post is probably impossible.

I must say that Map foundy, mising people who participiate before, and now you must pray people to give hes opinion and sugestion, and map stay in one place and not move forward, now i have map in Map IDea-Imperium Romanum-and i update two time in two days, and nobody give hes feedback,Same situation is with ARdennes offensive(except two three person).
I can not go around and drag people for hand to come and look map and give sugestion.
Golden age of feedback, when i create Eastern front is history.

Maybe is solution to get more CA in map foundry?

qwerts, C.A. arent here to give feedback, we are here to "run" the foundry.

I pop into your maps frequently, but not being a big history buff I dont leave feedback because thats usually where the discussion lies, the history. :)

But i do understand that there is a lack of feedback lately, but its been slowing picking back up i believe.

It comes in waves. It's been a slow period since christmas, but I'm sure it will pickup again. there's some new enhancements coming to the site, so it should generate more interest in maps.

I have no beef with the foundry. It fulfills just what I need. My favorite time was when Tisha almost had Puget sound quenched, and we all thrashed her thread. That was fun, and it served a purpose!

I've seen 'waiting on bad_speler' since the day I joined (admitedely not that long ago). I'm not sure what his role is in the map, but someone go find a cattle prod and get him back here!!

As far as I can tell, there's (generally) one person who comes up with the idea and who does the graphics, then an officially assigned XML Guru and a CA - would it be helpful to have backups for these two roles in case the primary person actually has to attend to his/her life?

Would that help whichever map it is that's waiting 'the-guy-who-can't-use-spell-check'? If not, is there a way to contact him and get his permission to move forward on the map w/o him here?

gimil I have posted at length about my beef with the foundry, there's no point repeating it here, if you like i could post the links to the other threads but the short version is:

oustiders like me are made feel unwelcome in general and our comments either result in a barrage of criticism or are ignored. the foundry tends to be extremely elitish /cliquey / snobbish

an awful lot of inferior maps seem to meander through the various stages, some even get queched before they are ready or have obviously not met minimum standards around here eg the latest quench Netherlands, IMHO that was not at quench level - arguably it was not at final forge level either, there are a number of other maps in final forge that are miles away the required standard for final forge, arguably at least one is not good enough for the main foundry yet its in final forge.

the maps in here tend to be what the map makers want to make as distinct from being consumer led - ie finding out what players want and then responding to their needs

As I said I have expanded at length on these points and others on other threads.
Don't now why people on here don't like being cooks, remember under siege: A former SEAL, now cook, is the only person who can stop a gang of terrorists when they sieze control of a US Navy battleship.

I have to point out that this is always going to be the case... Why would anyone want to work on a map that they don't want to play?

If the MapMakers were getting paid for this then the Admins could dictate market needs - but as it is - these people are volunteers - this isn't a job - therefore they will work on what they want to work on - not what someone tells them they should work on.

I'm not disagreeing with you Yeti but it is a beef i have with the foundry as asked by gimil when he put the question.

Obviously people only work on what they are interested in but if some proper empirical research was carried out on maybe 100 - 200 players chosen at random and those results posted on here in the mp ideas section - some map makers may be interested in responding to the results. coleman made a stab at this via a few threads in general discussion but as well as being more scientific I suspect my methodology would produce better results. Obviously then it would be up to map makers whether or not they wanted to use that data to help them decide what type of map to make. My suspicion is a few would.

Indeed - but is that upto the Foundry to do - or is it upto the General Populace to do...

we have 2 problems in the foundry:

1. map makers
2. feedback givers

1. map makers:
a. they don't know when to put a map on abandoned status.
b. they don't know how to advertise
c. they can't criticise themselves
d. they don't provide fast updates

2. feedback givers
a. they don't read threads
b. they don't explain their complaints

i could go on and write a lot about the above points but i have mentioned them a lot of times so far.

there's no need for surveys. if people want a certain map they come and post an idea then it is up for grabs. any map maker can look in the ideas thread and do something from there. that's the best survey.

i constantly check the ideas thread but so far i haven't found anything i might be interested in doing.

glad to hear it DiM and i'm sure you are not alone in doing this but in gemeral people on this site are unaware they can do that ie post ideas that others will make (assuming the idea appeals to them)
