Make sure a) You are on a different layer than the text layer b) You have nothing selected c) The layer you are working on is visible.
Can you be more spesific though? What exactly did you do/ try to do.

Ok, after using the text, I tried to paint. the text box was highlighted and I didn't know how to unselect it. I tried unselect everything button but it didn't work.

2 ways: Under the "Image" drop down, you can change the size of an entire image by selecting "Scale Image". Once there you'll see 2 boxes to change the size of the image along the X and Y plane, you can make it bigger or smaller. If you click on the little chain link you can change either plane independently. (NOTE: this WILL warp the image)
You can do the same thing under the "Layer" drop down by clicking on the similar option of "Scale Layer." The screen is exactly the same as with "Scale Image." Only this will just scale the selected layer. So if you copy a jpg into an existing project you scale it to the size you need and then add it as a new layer.

Using any line making tool (pencil, paintbrush, ink, clone, etc) click on your canvas where you want to start your line then hold down the "SHIFT" key. Move the mouse around the screen and you'll see a line attached to the original point you made. Left click where you want the line to end and it will draw the straight line.

GIMP problems

I have GIMP 2.6.6 for x64 windows, and I have windows 7. Now, it often crashes when I try to use certain things, mostly when I go to edit the color balance or saturation. I go to colors > desaturate and then it crashed every time. It crashes less frequently when I go to colors > colorize, but still frequent enough to be a problem.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a fix?

Ok, Never mind, I re-installed a different version of GIMP and that works.

That is probably the best thing about such community-developed open software packages: when there is an OS upgrade, a new version of the application often appears in very short order which at least gets it running again, if not fully taking advantage of the new OS.

You likely closed your layer dialog box. Hit Ctrl-L It'll pop back up.
