In the style of a regional or continental map, how is this for an example? I spent the last hour and a half whipping this up - a Fantasy/Viking Era map (hardly complete) with enough RISK game qualities to qualify for Conquer Club.

This is not an entry, just a startup example.

How far off is this map to what you'd describe as "your type of game map?"

It has no easily divisible "continents", or bonus groupings, but that's something that can be fixed easily by giving each grouping a unique texture or color overlay or something. Otherwise, it looks pretty good :)

You mean like this?

I realize I only created 3 regions, and that's certainly not enough. Again, just an example. If I had any forethought, I would have divided the larger central island into 2 or 3 separate divisions (like Europe and Asia are separate player areas in traditional RISK, yet landlocked together, just the same.)

I'd have placed a dividing line along that central mountain ridge, pulled the borders back to the base of the mountains and only allow units to cross via the two passes north and south, and blocked from directly crossing the mountain range. The Northeast and the Southern reaches could be separate regions as well.

I'm getting a better grasp at what you do here.

Edit: forgot to upload the new map... duh!

it looks pretty good, but I think you might want to aim for more simple terrain on the map. Right now, your image seems to be half realistic terrain, and half solid colors. You'll want to pick one or the other, because mixing the two kinds usually doesn't look too great.
keep the terrain simple, but at the same time still wonderful to look at.
Like these:
They have simple terrain that still looks great. It's not entirely realistic, but this kind of theme works well for risk maps. it seems like large, flat terrain works much better than rough, mountainous terrain. These are three completed maps that use realistic terrain:

I like that third one, but needs a bit more color, IMO. The ridges giving the illusion of changes in elevation is nice as well.

Its hard to get the uber realistic look out of my mapping, with mountains and all, but I'm sure I could train myself to tame this aspect from me! :?

THe one thing you could to is, basicly play a few games, try out the diffrent gameplays we have. And then you get better grasp how we do things.
