CC Terminology and Map Terminology

Postby MrBenn on Wed Jul 14, 2010 6:42 am

I'd be interested to see people's opinions on the use of expressions such as 'territories', 'regions', 'continents' and 'zones'...

How do you refer to the spaces where your armies are, and do you think maps should use common phrases or stick with "official" terminology?

So there's no confusion, I tend to call individual regions 'territories' and bonus zones 'bonuses', e.g. "That bonus takes too many territories to defend."

Well, I usually use the terminology stated in the instructions page:

Terminology:
"regions" are the total number of regions you occupy.
"zone bonus" are bonus troops you get for occupying all of the regions that make up a zone.
"spoils bonus" is the number of troops you get for turning in a group of spoils.

I often use territories as well, when referring to regions, and I tend to call to the spoils 'Cards'.

I don't like to use the word continents to refer the Zone bonus, as its not necessarily correct. That was a term directly connected to the classic board-game Risk where all 'Zone' bonus were indeed constituted by Continents.

I like the use of terminology as used on Conquer Club---when it does not have an impact on the theme of the map.

But when the theme of map can better be described using other similar terminology, I usually don't mind a different set.

XML says: Territories, Continents
Game engine says: Regions, -
Official CC lingo says: Regions, Bonus zones

My preference: Territories, Bonus areas.

I've often wondered about the legal issues involved in the continued use of the terms "territory" and "continent" in the XML, after all the work to avoid those terms in other (admittedly more visible) portions of the website. (I was going to say legal risks, but I wasn't sure I could use that word here. ;) )

It is probably fine, since they are terms we've used to describe various technical functions/categories/things. We could change continent to 'Blob,' or any other word, and make that them technical terms.

On the flip side - it would be a matter of 30 minutes work (if that) to rework all the XML and the game engine if it was necessary!!
