Beta Test teams?

Postby Industrial Helix on Mon Apr 26, 2010 7:04 pm

Here's what I'm thinking, Beta maps need some test teams to go through the map and different settings and look for things that need to be resolved in the map.

With 13 Colonies, I'm finding that there's some things I'd rather have tweaked before it got out of Beta but never discovered them until recently. I think a more formalized Beta team might have helped to prevent this.

How it'd work:

A player interested in volunteering as a Beta test team would list the settings they typically play and play around 5 games or so on the Beta map. They then post a quick report of trends they observed and whether or not it hurts the map.

Teams are organized by the mapmaker, who will be provided with a list of volunteers and they can just send out the invites. Some sort of tourny permission would be needed.

Thoughts?

I like the idea. Optionally, the mapmaker could participate in the games himself as well, so he could see first hand how the gameplay works...

Right, but what I want to do with the teams is cover the gamestyles I don't typically play and get some advice from those who do.

Hmm... that actually sounds good. I myself don't play a lot of fog games or quads, and I don't play freestyle at all... it would be good to have someone test those game types.

Yeah, I'm all for this idea.

Well, i'm kind of thinking that it might work as a sort of tournament. Have the various categories and then have people to sign up for which ever category, or multiple categories, they want. But I dunno if it would be appropriate to hand out a prize for something like this.

Either way, something akin to tourney privileges would be necessary.

you know, seeing all the Foundry games posted, I'm getting the impression that none of you guys plays fog of war. Which is odd, since that's all I ever like to play.

So yeah, I can definitely see how this idea could help bring in other perspectives.

Great idea!

I for one play 90% Seq-auto-no spoils-chained-fog

I prefer Sequential Automatic Fog, spoils and reinforcements depend on the setting and the map. There are some crazy things you can get away with in the Fog.

As for the idea, the track record of "sign up for this and be involved" teams is not very great on CC. The idea has some merit, and with the new tournaments system we could perhaps get a Beta Test Series going on with minimal difficulty. No prize except having a tournament victory, which is pretty sweet in my opinion, since I don't have one.

Tournament is probably going to be the best way to do this. But I want to maximize players participate.

For example, I play a lot of 2v2 and 3v3, if I was signing up for a Beta Test Tourny I would want to join both groupings but under tourney rules only one person per grouping because it would create an uneven advantage for the prize.
