SEPTEMBER 2016 - Smiley Challenge

Postby Razorvich on Sat Sep 03, 2016 9:43 am

Official Monthly Challenge for September 2016
Written by Razorvich for the Community Team and the Chatters

September (from Latin septem, "seven") was originally the seventh of ten months on the oldest known Roman calendar, with March (Latin Martius) the first month of the year until perhaps as late as 153 BC. After the calendar reform that added January and February to the beginning of the year, September became the ninth month, but retained its name. It had 29 days until the Julian reform, which added a day.

September is the ninth month and the only month with the same number of letters in its name in English as the number of the month.

The last day of September in any year always falls on a different day of the week from the last day of any other month.

The autumnal equinox in the northern hemisphere and the vernal or spring equinox in the southern hemisphere occur on dates varying from 21 September to 24 September (in UTC).

In 325 A.D Nicene council officially adopted the 'Julian Calendar' which declared that 'a year would be 365 days and 6 hours long' and March 25th being the 'New year'. Many centuries passed and at last astronomers found out the flaw in Julian calendar which exceeded the newly measured 'Solar year' by 11 minutes. This amounted over time from 325 A.D to 1582 A.D, exceeding nearly 10 days!
Pope Gregory XIII ordered a change from Julian to the Gregorian Calendar in 1582, they had to cut down 11 days! Therefore, days were cut out between 2nd and 14th September 1752.

ABOVE IS A CONFUSING NUMBER OF FACTS

show: Message from razorvich to you all
Thank you all for the privilage of designing something different for you all to play during September.
I know there were a few hickups along the way, and grumbles from a few......your feedback concerning the English Language has been noted for any future events that I plan.

The goals of this event were:
1. To drive interest in the "Clean out the Pantry Games" (over 200+ games this month)
2. To Create Forum traffic
3. To Create Chat traffic
4.Give you all something to think about

ALL have been achieved... and for that I thank you all. =D>

This has been a team effort, as we also kept it secret from the other Mods before launch....

This event had a low point count required for a medal for a reason
This event had a Scavenger Hunt for the Vowels
This event encoraged forum posts in the Joke thread
This event was designed so that if you posted 1 joke per day, you would have enough clues to solve the puzzle

MY FELLOW CONSPIRATORS INCLUDED:
jmyork82 - Thrust into the Mod World and having to deal with a crazy event 1st up... thank you
CatchersMitt14 - Executive Producer.. keeping an evil eagle eye that things worked correctly ... thank you
Dukasaur - Event Consultant ... making sure all of us kept it real ... thank you
Bigwham - Without the boss... it could not have be done ... thank you boss

1 joke per day.... WHAT A JOKE

My answer:
LOOK AT THE VOWELS !!

There were over 400 clues given out during the month via the September Joke Thread and the Chat Rooms ...
Here are some of the Cryptic Clues given out:

Round Length: 24 Hours
Above Silver, Spell out what turn your game must end
Numbers like "1 or 2" mean something completely different to .. "one and two"
All is not what it seems with the Silver......conditions may change at the right time..
Game Type: Standard
Play Order: Sequential
Smiley token has the win conditions too
window is closed, spell out when to end your game till it opens again
Round Limit: None
Play Order: Sequential
Numbers that appear to be different, should be treated as such, as they mean something else.

Even managed to confuse the Boss...
bigWham wrote:Well, it's wild and crazy and I like it.

But, to answer "Can This Work?", I need to understand the token win conditions better. I'm more than a little confused by the descriptions.

And for those chasing Tokens in October....
bigWham wrote:using a specific set of settings is fine. of course once 1 player works it out, everyone can copy it... and they may just do it by trying all settings rather than solving the puzzle.
Linking it to the round is also interesting because it may make for some 'unnatural' gameplay with people trying to win by a specific round... presuming they work out what they need to do.

Can we get an OFFICIAL explanation of what is REQUIRED to send as an answer for Smiley Code Challenge? Is it the Spreadsheet decoded OR "When you have identified correctly the Token Conditions"?

Is it what each Smiley letter is OR exact Token Conditions? OR both?

Since only one official entry will be accepted, I guess we should at least know what are the rules. This way it makes no sense.

It was a dark, cold, winter night. Outside was raining heavily and blows of cold bone chilling air was coming in through the broken attic window, when a deceitfully charming baby voice came from outside the bedroom:
Mom, toilet paper is fiinished!

EDIT: medal is for 50 points but decoding the 4 smiley puzzles gives only 33 points, so that means you need to play at least 17 games? counting on you get the bronze token for each

I'm not sure I follow your question.

The code does not change at all. It will remain the same all month.

Actually decoding the puzzles does not award any points towards the fifty needed for a CA. The puzzle solutions can be submitted to Raz for a shot at winning a GA.

This challenge can be completed in less than seventeen games by winning a combination of token types. You are correct, seventeen bronze tokens alone will get you over the fifty point requirement if that is how you choose to complete the challenge.

Thanks I figured it out, that is why I deleted my posts ;)
