Can someone explain to me why you would want to join an alliance in a game where only the winner gets any points?

There is no value in coming second, so for two or more players to join forces for part of the game before battling for the win between themselves just spoils it ...

the best singles player will be whoever wins my Champion of Champions Tournament, which was set up to pitch the top 64 against each other in singles matches - all 64 entrants brave enough to join were within the top 90 on the scoreboard at the time.
